Understanding Students: Survey of EdSe 3204 Candidates Spring 2005

Self Pre-Assessment on EdSe 3204 Course Outcome

I have developed the following major outcomes for our EdSe 3204 course based on your input as a class. Although you are not expected to have met these yet, it is important to me to know the extent of your knowledge, skills, & experience in these so I can align my teaching & the course with your needs, and so that I can guide you in designing learning experiences that challenge you. Thus for each objective please (a) rate your current knowledge & skill level (b) list any work that you have done in the area and any examples of work samples that you may have to demonstrate your work in this area.

Use this rating scale for each outcome: 0 = no experience 1 = basic/beginning knowledge 2 = proficient knowledge & skill 3 = extensive knowledge & skills

Course outcomes: rating Existing experience & work 1. Create effective and supportive learning environments based on an understanding of student diversity and effective instructional practices.

2. Design instruction and assessment based on an understanding of students, their needs, and professional educational standards.

3. Plan and teach effective lessons using: (a) (a) (a) a variety of teaching methods & (b) Using technology as a tool to enhance teaching and learning (please (b) (b) tell me about your level of tech skills) 4. Understand and be able to develop and use different forms of student assessment.

5. Model the characteristics of an intentional and professional teacher. In particular, engage in an ongoing process of reflection about their own teaching and the teaching of others, supporting their constructive critiques with reference to principles from this course, from supplementary readings, and from field observations. 6. Demonstrate their achievement of the above outcomes and of their continuing development as an educator through their portfolio aligned with professional education standards (INTASC, MN SEP, ISTE, and Education Department themes.) I would appreciate it if you would take a few moments to answer the following questions about yourself. Feel free to include as much or as little as you want.

1. What are the most important sources of motivation for your own learning?

2. From what types of class activities & teaching methods do you learn most? (what is/are your preferred learning mode(s)? e.g. auditory, visual, tactile) or if you are familiar with Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, what are you dominant intelligences?

3. What "pet peeves" do you have about college instructors?

4. If you have any disability, either permanent or temporary, or any other special circumstances which might affect your ability to perform in this class I invite you to let me know so that together we can adapt methods, materials, or assignments as needed to enable you to participate fully in this class.

5. Tell me about yourself -- for example: your outside interests, hobbies, any strong beliefs that you have that you'd like to share, what your plans are for your future, and anything else that will help me get to know you and make my teaching geared toward your interests and needs.

6. What haven’t I asked you and would you like me to know in order for me to be able to help you make the most of this class and your teacher preparation program?

7. What are your expectations of ME in this class? What can I do to help you make the most from this class?
