JOHN MUIR MIDDLE SCHOOL FALCON FLYER

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE October 2016

Dear John Muir Families,

Thanks to all of you who attended Back to School Night. We were happy to see you at John Muir and are excited about working with you and your student this year. We encourage you to continue being an active participant in our school community and look forward to seeing you at other events. As we move into the final weeks of first quarter, the staff and I urge you to continue communicating with the school and your child’s teachers to ensure your students continued success. Continue to regularly check your child’s student planner and call or email your child’s teachers or counselors at the first sign that your student is struggling. The best way to keep connected to your student’s academic progress is through Aeries.net, our web-based student progress reporting system. If you haven’t registered for Aeries.net, please call the office so we can get you started.

To deepen your connections to the John Muir community we encourage you to become a volunteer around the school. If you wish to volunteer around the school please fill out the parent volunteer application at the end of this Falcon Flyer and return it to the front office. As a parent volunteer we need your support in the cafeteria, during lunch supervision, and at special events and activities. We also encourage your participation on committees across the school. We encourage you to attend School Site Counsel Meetings (SSC), Parent Teacher Student Organization meetings (PTSO), our upcoming Title 1 Parent Meeting, or English Language Advisory Committee meetings (ELAC). Listen for information about these meeting in our weekly phone calls, or visit our website at www.slusd.us/muir

We look forward to us being active partners in our effort to create positive student learning and outcomes for all students at John Muir Middle School.

Sincerely,

From the desk of Jorge Gonzalez, Vice Principal

The first month of school is officially over. We had a busy month in September and we are looking forward to what October is going to bring. On Thursday, September 15 WomensWork sponsored a fieldtrip for 20 of our girls in which they had the opportunity to listen to women working in the trades. This event was truly inspiring and provided our students with an opportunity to meet mentors in the field. John Muir would like to thank all of the sponsors who made this event possible: City of San Leandro, Divine Home Care, Sheet Metal Workers (SMART) Local Union No. 104, Operating Engineers, Soroptimist of the East Bay and Glaziers & Glassworkers Local 169 and our partners: SLED and Kaiser.

We make safety one of our top priorities. On September 20th we had the opportunity to partner up with SLPD and conduct a lockdown drill. Our partnership with SLPD under the guidance of our School Resource Officers provided our staff with important feedback in order to keep their students’ safe in an emergency. We thank SLPD for their support. We will also be participating in the Great California ShakeOut in the month of October along with thousands of other school districts and organizations across the state.

On October 6th you are invited to our Common Core State Standards Night from 6-8pm. Come and learn about the new CCSS and how they impact your student’s education. We will begin the evening with the math session followed by the ELA session. Come for one or both sessions. Snacks will be provided.

Lastly, this past week we celebrated our Spirit Week. We had theme days and activities that promoted school spirit and community. We closed the week with a rally and together in one voice we acclaimed “WE ARE FALCONS!”

Looking forward to another great month in October.

Respectfully,

www.slusd.us/muir Jorge Gonzalez

Falcon Sports Corner Athletic Director - Mrs. Helen Morris 510-618-4400 x3786 [email protected]

Welcome to the 2016-2017 Athletic Season. We are up and running with our Fall Sports. X-Country, Girls Softball and Flag Football. I am Helen Morris, John Muir’s Athletic Director. I am proud to work with our Student-Athletes and Coaches. This year there are a lot of new procedures/changes to our program. First, All students must have a Sports Physical from their physician in order to try-out for one of our teams. The sports physical is good for all sports for the school year of 2016-2017. This is an annual physical that the athlete must have. All sports physicals must be dated after May 1st of the previous school year. (ex. May 1, 2017 for the 2017-18 school year). The student must also have a sports packet of forms filled out before he/she may try out. And lastly the student must have a 2.0 Grade Point Average to try out. Quite a few of our sports have try outs, where we must cut the teams down to a specific number. The following teams have cuts: Girls Softball, Football (if necessary), Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Soccer, and Girls Volleyball. The rest of our sports do not have cuts.

We offer the following Sports;

Fall Winter Spring Aug-Oct. Nov - Feb. Feb.- June Girls Softball Boys Basketball Tennis Flag Football Girls Basketball Golf X-Country Boys Soccer Wrestling Girls Soccer Track and Field Girls Volleyball

There will be a team meeting for Sign ups about one week ahead of try outs. So if your son/daughter would like to try out for any of the Winter or Spring Sports, Please make your appointment for a Sports Physical NOW!!!! It will take a while for you to get an appointment and then in some cases 2-4 weeks to get the paperwork, to hand to me that says your child is cleared to play sports. I also have a form that you may take to your doctor to have them fill out and return to me. This can be found on the JMMS Website under Athletics, under Physical Form. Or you child may pick one up from me in the Girls PE Office.

We are on the JMMS Website. There is a tab for Athletics. All of the forms, sports in season, the win loss records, schedules, Schools in the League and more, is on it. It is a work in progress. I plan to have more on the website, but for now the most important items are there. Check us out!!!

www.slusd.us/muir So far our X-Country team has had 2 meets. They are coached by Don Paxman. We had a fun run at San Leandro High School, that involved Bancroft, Muir and SLHS runners. Out of 300 runners, Jose Corona came in 21st. And most of Muir’s runners came in, in the top 200. Then last week we traveled to Alameda and participated in the Crab Cove fun run. Participants could run in the 1 mile run or the 2 mile run. There were about 500 runners. In the 1 mile boys division, Jose Corona came in 1st place out of 130 runners. In the girl’s 2 mile run, Sofia Monjaraz came in 14th place and Joyce Ma came in 15th out of 90 runners. Congratulations!!!!

The Flag Football Team - Coached by Al Ritchon, Mason Hayenga, and Anthony Caldwell. Have had 2 games. They are a young team with only 3 returning players. They are going through growing pains and learning everyday at practice and at games. They are 0-2 in season and working very hard. Keep up the good work!!

The Girls Softball Team is coached by Eugene Denard. They have started out their season with a bang!! With 4 games under their belt, they are 2-2 in season. We have had great pitching from Caroline Evans and Ashley Aguayo. The girls are working hard, and have displayed good defense, and at bats. We congratulate them on job well done. Keep up the good work.

If you have any questions about Athletics, Please feel free to contact me. Hope you all can come out and Support our Falcon Athletes !!!!

GO FALCONS!!!!!
