SBA Leadership Positions

CHIEF OF STAFF – Anna Myers

The Chief of Staff is responsible for Executive operations. She manages the office of the SBA, ensures that positions throughout the organization are filled, coordinates communications on behalf of the organization, and manages the meetings of the various cabinet offices. To that end, the COS is responsible for holding meetings with the Vice Presidents and their directors, keeping the organization updated on the Faculty-Student committees, overseeing appointments and elections, and serving as the contact-point for all communications including press releases, publicity, and the web site.

Oversees: Deputy Chief of Staff – George Ryan Holton This individual works closely with the Chief of Staff to ensure that all the SBA is functioning properly. The Deputy Chief of Staff will coordinate communication between the Faculty- Student committees and the Executive branch. He or she is encouraged to attend senate meetings. This position also requires close attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and to regularly keep the executive officers abreast of events and concerns. He or she is also responsible for creating the SBA Newsletter and monitoring the weekly events email.

Creative Director – OPEN POSITION This individual is responsible for SBA Branding on publications and communications. He or she will coordinate with the VP of Programming as required, and work closely with the Directors of Publicity to promote SBA events and activities. This position will also work closely with the Director of Technology to manage the SBA website. Familiarity with graphic design is desirable.

SBA Photographer(s) – OPEN POSITION Photographers take photos of various SBA activities and events, and provide them to the Creative Director and/or the Director of Technology as requested.

Director of Communications – Aaron Levin This individual assists the COS in ensuring effective communication throughout the SBA.

Directors of Publicity – Keaghan Ames & Sameen Ahmadnia These individuals will work closely with the Creative Director to create publications and/or posters on behalf of the SBA- for sponsored events and activities and maintaining the SBA social media presence, bulletin boards. These individuals will also monitor event participation by collecting attendance records.

Director of Technology and Assistant Director(s) – Grant Nelson (Director) OPEN POSITION(S) FOR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR(S) This individual oversees the use, and maintenance of the SBA website, working closely with the Creative Director on the website design. He or she will also help student groups with online PayPal sales for their fundraisers. This position is a great opportunity to develop computer as well as interpersonal skills. Director of Elections and Assistant Director(s) – Jordan Harvey (Director) OPEN POSITION(S) FOR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR(S) This individual is responsible for soliciting SBA candidates, publicizing elections, and carrying out any such elections in both the fall and the spring. Duties include coordinating the Town Hall meetings, holding information sessions on elections, and creating an elections report that will be published to the student body. This is a critical position requiring someone with strong interpersonal skills who can also objectively and even handedly enforce reasonable campaign rules against candidates.

Elections Committee – OPEN POSITIONS These individuals work with the Director of Elections and Assistant Director to conduct SBA elections.

Director of Student Organizations (Chair of Gavel Club) – Stephanie Williamson This individual is responsible for running the “Gavel Club”—or organization of GW Law Student Organization Presidents. He or she will be the primary conduit between student organizations and the SBA, identifying needs of this constituency and coordinating meetings of the Gavel Club for all student organization presidents. This individual will work closely with the CoS and the President.

Faculty Appointment Committee Representative – Applications closed This individual will serve as the student representative to the Faculty’s Appointments Committee, and will chair the SBA Faculty Appointment Committee, selecting students to participate and coordinating which committee members will sit in on interviews of potential faculty hires.

Tenure & Promotions Committee Representative – OPEN POSITIONS This individual will serve as the student representative on the Faculty Tenure & Promotions Committee.

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT – Simon Chun The EVP is in charge of coordinating, overseeing, and facilitating the meetings of the SBA Senate. He will also develop programs to train new senators, as well as assign senators to the various senate committees. He will also work closely with the President as a member of the Executive Board to provide input and find ways to improve the law school in general.

Oversees: Secretary of the Senate – Applications closed The Secretary will be responsible for attending all Senate Meetings, taking the minutes for any Senate meeting, distributing the draft minutes to the Senate, ensuring that the Senate has an opportunity to approve of the minutes at its next meeting if another meeting is held before the end of a Senate’s term, and ensuring the prompt publication of draft and approved minutes of the Senate, redacted to exclude discussions made during executive session, on the SBA’s official web page. This individual will also coordinate with the Media Office to have senate meetings recorded. This role may be appointed within the senate, but is open to application from non-senators who would like to get insight into the interworking of the Senate. Familiarity with Roberts Rules of Order is beneficial but not required

VICE PRESIDENT OF FINANCE – George Soussou The VPF is the only individual with power to authorize disbursement of money from any student organization account, including the SBA. This individual is responsible for processing all such requests, heading all efforts to solicit money from outside sources including the larger university student government, keeping regular records of the finances, and keeping the Executive and Legislative branches appraised of such finances through regular reports. The VPF is responsible for all SBA accounts and reimbursements as well as setting policies, making reports, and generally overseeing financial affairs. This position requires close attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and a willingness to attend Senate meetings to serve as a point of information to the Finance Committee (or send his or her designee).

Oversees: Deputy Vice Presidents of Finance – Chris Ohslund & Jesse Isleman This position works closely with the VPF and requires fluency with all rules and regulations relevant to SBA finances. The Deputy VPF’s role is primarily one of support to the VPF.

Financial Comptrollers – Sara Kamal - POSITIONS AVAILABLE This position is responsible for all book-keeping for assigned student organizations, including any requests by student organizations to seek funding from the university student government. The Comptroller will assist the VPF in his/her duties in processing disbursements to student organizations.

VICE PRESIDENT OF PROGRAMMING – EMILY CURTIS The VPP is responsible for coordinating most events that the SBA sponsors for the student body. These include major events such as Barrister’s Ball, the Halloween Festival/Party, and the annual ski trip, as well as weekly events such as Bar Reviews.

Oversees: Director of Major Programming and Assistant Director(s) – Hannah Becker (Director); Josh Peterson, Shirley Qin (Assistant Directors) This individual is responsible for planning and executing all major events put on by the SBA including the Nationals Game Outing, Halloween Party and Festival, the Ski Trip and Barrister’s Ball.

Weekly Programming Director(s) and Assistant Director(s) – Jessica Micciolo (Director); Dominique Meyer, Michael Gershoni (Assistant Directors) This individual is primarily responsible for planning the weekly Bar Reviews, in addition to the End of the Semester and End of the Year Parties.

Director of Student Morale – Veniqua Stewart This individual works closely with the Chief Wellness Officer & Chief Athletics Officer to promote a positive and happy environment within the law school. This individual should be comfortable socializing and overseeing student perks, including but not limited to Wired Wednesday.

Chief Athletics Officer – Matt Bernstein This individual is responsible for advertising intramural athletic opportunities, Flag Football Tournament and working with law school student organizations to plan other athletic events. Director of Transfer Student Affairs & Programming – Lana Khoury ASSISTANT POSITION OPEN Director of Evening Student Affairs & Programming – Conner Prochaska Director of LLM/Post-JD Student Affairs & Programming – POSITION OPEN These directors will work with both the VP of Student Affairs and VP of Student Programming. It is the responsibility of each director to act as the contact person between the group of students they represent and the SBA Executive Branch. The individual director must reach out to students within these groups, determine specific issues to be addressed and collaborate on an agenda to work on these issues. Additionally, these individuals will work with to produce programming that will meet the specific needs of constituency.

Programming Committee Member(s) – POSITIONS OPEN Members of the programming committee will participate and assist the directors with planning and executing programming events throughout the year.

Directors of Commencement Programming and Assistant Directors – POSITIONS OPEN This individual will oversee the commencement programming committee, which will direct the selection of student participant in the commencement ceremonies, coordinate Grad Week programming and any graduating student programming that takes place during the year. Responsibilities include coordinating with the law school administration regarding the actual event logistics associated with the Commencement ceremony such as invitations, speakers, etc. This individual should be a graduating student, but assistant directors may be 2Ls or 3Ls. This individual will cooperate with the Class Gift Directors.

Commencement Programming Committee – POSITIONS OPEN This committee works under the direction of the Director of Commencement Programming to organize and prepare all commencement week events.

VICE PRESIDENT OF STUDENT AFFAIRS – Ryan Mock The VPSA is responsible for much of the communication between the SBA and students. This position is primarily focused on the services provided by the SBA to the student population, but also includes oversight of 3L Programming and other events.

Oversees: Deputy Vice President of Student Affairs – Miles McCann This individual chairs the student services committee and is responsible for coordinating all of the services that the SBA provides to the student body. Such services include the sale of lockers, business cards, and other fundraising activities put on by the SBA.

Student Services Committee – POSITIONS OPEN This committee works to promote, staff and coordinate all services, including locker sales, business cards, and other student affairs activities.

Diversity Affairs Director, Assistant Director(s) This individual is responsible for coordinating and promoting cooperation amongst the various minority student groups. The Director is responsible for coordinating the Fall Minority Student Reception and Spring Diversity Week. The position also serves as a link between the SBA and various concerns of the minority student groups, and may help to coordinate SBA activities in conjunction with different diversity recognition months.

Director(s) of Graduating Class Gift and Class Gift Section Leaders – POSITIONS OPEN These graduating individuals set up the Class Gift, solicits donations, and runs the Section Grudge Match/Class Gift Reception during the week prior to Commencement. This individual will liaise with Director of Commencement Programming. Class gift section leaders will be selected in the fall.

Director of Transfer Student Affairs & Programming – ASSISTANT POSITION OPEN Director of Evening Student Affairs & Programming – Conner Prochaska Director of Post-JD/LLM Student Affairs & Programming - POSITIONS OPEN These directors will work with both the VP of Student Affairs and VP of Student Programming. Career Services Director – Jake Berdine This individual is responsible for collecting feedback from the student body, and providing this feedback to Career Services. This individual will work closely with the career services committee and the staff at Career Services to ensure a clear line of communication between students and Career Services.

Career Services Committee – POSITIONS OPEN These individuals are responsible for assisting the Career Services Director. They will help collect feedback from students to prepare a student careers report, and will provide input on how Career Services can improve its services for the students.

VICE PRESIDENT OF OUTREACH – KRISHNA KAVI The VPO is responsible for relations between the SBA and the community both within our school and beyond the student population. This individual will also be responsible for developing and maintaining an alumni listserve, in conjunction with the Alumni Office.

Oversees: Director of Alumni Relations and Assistant Director(s) – Keaghan Ames (Director), Evan Glover (Assistant Director); ASSISTANT POSITION OPEN This individual is responsible for coordinating events and communications between the SBA and alumni. This individual will also be responsible for planning new events and creating programming that involves alumni and students. This position works closely with the Office of Alumni Affairs. Alumni Committee – POSITIONS OPEN This committee works with the Director of Alumni Relations to coordinate the events and communication between the SBA and alumni, including soliciting student feedback on alumni relations.

Director of External Affairs – Ruben Garcia

Director American Bar Association Relations and Assistant Director – Trevis Niemeyer (Director); ASSISTANT POSITIONS OPEN The Director of ABA Relations attends all relevant ABA conferences, meetings, and roundtables. The representative is also responsible for soliciting new members for the ABA from the GW Law student population, preparing all applications, and making all nominations on behalf of GW Law and the SBA. ABA Liaisons communicate to the President and help publicize to the student body ABA events and competitions.

ABA Assistant Director for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program – POSITION OPEN The goal of VITA is to provide free assistance by filling out income tax forms to low-income residents of DC. VITA is run by groups across the country, through many organizations including student groups at colleges and law schools. Local DC residents who have income of less than $49,000 are eligible to receive help filling out their forms.

ABA Assistant Director for Work-A-Day – POSITION OPEN In correspondence with the annual ABA Law Student Division Work-A-Day program, this assistant director assists in planning the GW Law students’ Work-A-Day programming. The Work-A-Day service project brings law students from across the country together to participate in a one-day public service project in their community.

ABA Committee – POSITIONS OPEN This committee consists of the SBA representative in the ABA as well as ABA Liaisons, and students who work to promote and execute all ABA related tasks, services and opportunities.

Pro Bono & Community Service Director and Assistant Director – LeighAnn Smith (Director), Chandos Culleen (Assistant Director) This individual chairs the committee that is responsible for coordinating all SBA public interest/pro bono legal efforts. To that end, this committee is responsible for securing new pro bono opportunities for students, and coordinating with the deans and faculty in pro bono opportunities. The committee is responsible for representing pro bono interests in the law school administration and serving as a liaison between public interest/pro bono student organizations and the SBA. Works closely with the ABA Assistant Director of VITA. Finally, this committee is responsible for coordinating SBA efforts related to Community Service, including working with student groups on events such as blood drives, food and clothing drives, fundraising and meal packaging.

Pro Bono & Community Services Committee – POSITIONS OPEN See above for description of committee activities. Director of Alternative Spring Break – POSITION OPEN This individual is responsible for planning, promoting, and executing GW Law's Alternative Spring Break program. The specific activities planned are left largely to the discretion of this individual, and close collaboration with the GW Law Pro Bono Program is encouraged. Applicants with prior planning experience or participation in any Alternative Spring Break will be given preference.

VICE PRESIDENT OF FIRST YEAR STUDENTS – ANDREW RAMOS The VP-FYS is responsible for all events the SBA puts on for First Year Students. He or she is responsible for working with the Orientation committee in planning events for the 1L Orientation. Additionally, he or she is responsible for planning the End of the Semester Parties for 1Ls, assisting 1L Senators in planning events for their sections, and any other supplemental programming that is planned particularly for 1Ls. It cannot be stressed enough that this position is fundamental to creating a community of 1L students, and requires a highly motivated, energetic and organized student who is driven by the idea of welcoming new students to our school. Additionally, the position requires extensive planning over the summer. This individual will also be responsible for creating and working with a 1L Advisory Board to include first year students & 1L Senators. This student must also be available for New Student Orientation in August 2014 (date TBD).

Oversees: Directors of Orientation (1L, Transfer, Evening, LLM) and Assistant Director(s) – Completed This committee is responsible for assisting the VP of First Year Students in planning the Orientation. This entails recruiting and coordinating volunteers, organizing a housing search weekend during the summer, and planning both social and informational events during Orientation week for new students, for each group. Director and Assistant Director(s) must be available to be in Washington, DC during orientation in August 2014.

Director and Assistant Director(s) of Mentoring – Jackie DerOvanesian (Director), Brian Beckerman (Assistant) This individual is responsible for coordinating the SBA Mentoring program in which 1Ls are paired with upperclassmen mentors. In addition to conducting the initial pairings, this Director is also responsible for conducting programming throughout the year to bring mentors and their mentees together. This part of the SBA programming should aim to be tied with Inn Affiliation.

Inns of Court Director – Sameen Ahmadnia This individual is responsible for chairing the Inns of Court committee. The primary responsibility of the Inns of Court Director is to collect feedback from students and the Inns of Court Advisors, and provide that feedback to the faculty and staff in charge of administering the Inns of Court Program. This individual may also be expected to work with faculty and staff to determine specific programming for the Inns of Court.

Inns of Court Advisors (6) – Positions Filled These individuals are responsible for serving as the SBA representatives to their respective Inns. He or she should be willing to serve as both a student activities and an academic mentor to the Inn. The primary time commitment will be attendance at the weekly or biweekly Inn of Court meetings. Inns of Court Advisors will also form the Inns of Court committee, which is responsible for obtaining feedback from students with respect to the Inns, and providing that feedback to the Inns of Court Director. 1L Leadership Board Member – POSITIONS AVAILABLE The 1L Leadership Board is a forum for 1L's to have their voices heard, bring issues and concerns to the attention of the SBA, and assist in organizing events for the peers.
