John Anderson’s articles and addresses

John Anderson’s articles and addresses fall into two broad groups. In the decade from 1927 to 1937, Anderson was prolific in both his academic writing and addresses to student societies and these writings are extensively documented. All his published philosophy can be found in the pages of the Australasian Journal of Psychology and Philosophy, of which he was editor from 1935 to 1946. His Freethought and Literary Society addresses were reported regularly in both the Union Recorder and Honi Soit. The reports for the Recorder were submitted by the secretary of the society and were either written by Anderson himself or by a student who had taken detailed notes and probably submitted the report to Anderson for vetting. The reports for Honi Soit were of variable quality depending on who was on the editorial staff of the paper. There were no known Andersonians on the staff during the thirties. Anderson’s political articles are found primarily in the Workers Weekly, The Communist, and The Militant, although there are also extensive handwritten addresses, articles and letters on politics in Anderson’s hand in the University Archives. While it is still too early to say that there is a complete list of his intellectual activity during this period, there is an excellent representative sample of his work for this decade available in published form. Four fifths of the articles and addresses in Studies in Empirical Philosophy, Art and Reality and A Perilous and Fighting Life were written in the thirties.

After 1939, John’s academic writing began to fall away and after 1943, stopped completely for another nine years. Similarly his addresses to student societies also decreased in number although there was a brief flurry of activity in the years immediately following the end of the war until the end of the Freethought Society in 1951. His academic articles became more regular after 1952, although his addresses to students occurred only occasionally after that time. Even though Anderson’s intellectual output was ‘regular’ from his return from sabbatical until his death, for this twenty three year period there is very little published work available. Only one fifth of Studies, Art and Reality and A Perilous and Fighting Life contain articles or addresses from this period and even if we include the articles collected for Education and Inquiry, the situation does not improve significantly. Hence, any assessment of Anderson’s thinking based only on his published work will be biased heavily towards his writings of the thirties when he was in his late thirties and early forties. Given that he continued writing until he was sixty eight, this emphasis overlooks some of his most developed writings. Anderson’s Early Addresses and Articles 1927 - 1938

John Anderson’s first decade at Sydney University was characterised by two features: his adherence to Communism and then Trotskyism, and his extensive philosophical writings. The material cited below reflects these two features. There are a large number of writings for the Communist publications, The Workers Weekly and The Communist, and for the Trotskyist publication, The Militant. Similarly there are a large number of writings for the A.J.P.P.. Apart from these writings, there are a large number of addresses for a number of student societies, particularly the Freethought Society and the Literary Society. These were typically reported in Honi Soit and the Union Recorder.

1938 Feb 10 A Textbook of Marxist Philosophy The Australian Highway pp 13 - 17 Anderson’s mature addresses and articles: 1939-1962

The list that follows is a record of every known article, address or public lecture that Anderson gave between 1939 and 1962. While the intellectual activity recorded here does not match the frenetic pace of the thirties, the extent and detail of his activity for this period is surprising given our previous understanding of the situation. Anderson clearly led an active academic life during the war years, was initially overwhelmed by the influx of students after the war, but gradually began producing again during the late forties. His involvement in student societies came to an end in 1951 although he could still gather a crowd of several hundred if it was known he was going to speak in public.

During the early war years, Anderson was pre-occupied with the implications of his rejection of Trotskyism (or Proletarianism, to use the broader term) and he gradually articulated a theory of liberal democracy. At the same time, he remained active in both the Literary and Freethought societies, although his interest in the Literary Society waned after he was defeated for the presidency in 1941. The Freethought Society remained a central focus of his attention although he was often asked to speak on educational issues at public forums and symposiums. Very few of his addresses appeared in the Recorder after 1939 and the main source of his public addresses on campus was Honi Soit. The reports for the paper written during the war were generally by students familiar with and sympathetic to Anderson’s position, although after the war most students were not sympathetic to Anderson’s increasingly strident anti-Communism. Annual conferences and congresses of the A.A.P.P. also provided a forum for Anderson to speak at, although he published no articles in the journal between 1943 and 1952. There were also small annual meetings of the Sydney branch of the A.A.P.P. at Newport during the summer New Year break during the war, although after the war the Newport congresses became increasingly professionally oriented and grew in size. The annual August congresses of the A.A.P.P. alternated between Melbourne and Sydney and although Anderson gave papers regularly, most records of these papers are rough notes in Anderson’s hand. Anderson’s activities were also reported in the daily press, particularly during the 1943 controversy.

Apart from 1946, for the five years after the end of the war, Anderson’s intellectual activity was constant and he regularly gave addresses to student groups and papers at philosophy conferences, although the written record of this activity is sparse. This was a period of increasing anti-Communism and conservatism and he came into increasing conflict with the student body. During this period, Anderson was also active in the W.E.A., especially the Newcastle branch centred around Harry Eddy. During 1950/51, the tension between John and the student body reached breaking point and after the cessation of the Freethought Society at the end of 1951, he was not formally involved with any political or educational organisation except for the university. From 1952 until his retirement, John’s intellectual interests became more general and historically inclined. Ruth Walker’s sabbatical in 1952 and his own in 1953, gave him more time for reading and writing and between 1952 and 1954 he wrote a number of significant articles and lectures across a wide range of subjects. In 1957 he became interested in the Orr case although there is no public record of him discussing the issue after his retirement in 1958. After his retirement, he continued his academic writing and in 1961 began preparing a collection of articles for publication. In that year, he was the subject of an attack by the Anglican Archbishop Dr. Gough which was widely reported in the daily press. In June 1962 he was presented with his portrait by Dobell and died in the following month.

Errata

The following items are records of addresses from this period which appear to be mistaken or of which no independent record has been found to exist. Two addresses – ‘Marxism’ (Honi Soit 8/7/41) and ‘University Liberalism Imperilled’ (Honi Soit 24/9/42) – were recorded by myself at some stage but I have not been able to verify their existence since then. Two other addresses ‘The History of the Freethought Society’ (Honi Soit July 1942) and an address on Honi Soit (Honi Soit September 1948) are cited by Alan Barcan in Radical Students but I have been unable to find them and Alan cannot provide further details. Three items – a letter re the 1949 coal strike (Honi Soit 13/7/49), an address on Education (reported by Ivison) to an AAP meeting in 1958 (Broadsheet 3, May 1958) and Anderson’s response to Archbishop Gough (Daily Telegraph 8/7/61) – are cited by Baker in Anderson’s Social Philosophy (pp 131, 137 and 142 respectively), but I have not been able to locate them. Baker also cites a 1943 address to the Freethought Society on ‘German Unconditional Surrender’ in Heraclitus 96 p 9 which I have not been able to locate. Finally there is the anomaly of an address titled ‘Liberty and the State’ to the Freethought Society 12/7/51 (part of Anderson’s notes on the 1951 Freethought debates, Anderson Archives, Ser 4 It 38) which do not have a speaker attributed to them and may have been given by Anderson himself. However, on that date Anderson gave an address on ‘The University and Religion’ and it is unlikely that he gave two addresses to the student body on the same day.
