SECURITY CONCERNS

Please be sure to be very aware when you are leaving your homes and returning to them. We must all be stringent and disciplined when it comes to our personal security. Yet, despite repetitive efforts to educate the community about vigilance, many still seem to think that security is only the responsibility of the SAPS and security providers. This is not the case. Personal security and combating crime is a three-way street between: the SAPS, private security companies and the community.

Let's continue to work together to keep your suburb safe!

REPORT all crimes timeously please – even attempted crimes. We need these statistics so that we can target the correct areas with full manpower.

SECTOR 2 CRIME STATS DEBRIEFING After the National crime states were recently released each Precinct has to go to the communities in each sector and break down how the crime stats have played a role and contributed in that specific sector. Linden SAPS invites ALL Sector 2 Residents to please join us in conjunction with the Sector 2 Sub Forum for this debriefing on: 7th November 18h30 Linden SAPS Hall

PLAN TO IMPROVE SERVICE DELIVERY WITH WARD BASED POLICING Since 1994 the City of Johannesburg's various bodies have operated in seclusion, albeit with a common goal of a well-run city. Now the City of Johannesburg is hoping that its integrated ward-based law enforcement strategy, also known as the Joburg 10 Plus programme, would have a measurable effect on disorder and crime. "Mayor Parks Tau launched the programme on 24 July. It wasn't cast in stone as there were many loose ends to tie up," said Region B director Vicky Shuping at the presentation held at Ferndale recreation centre. She said the programme was first presented at regional ward level, streamlined, and then presented at local ward level. Peter Monyuku, Region B management support officer, walked attendees through the plan. "The strategic objectives include improving the effectiveness of law enforcement, reducing the incidence of violent crime, and having a multi-disciplinary approach to managing crime and grime," said Monyuku. This means that selected staff from urban management, environmental health, development planning, emergency management services and Metro police are to work hand in hand in dealing with issues in the various wards. They will also work with city utilities such as City Power and Joburg Water. Staffing on the ground includes the 10 Metro officers per ward as rolled out earlier this year, with six urban management and six building inspectors per region. There will be one environmental health officer dedicated to each ward. A team of 10 people representing each city department has been dedicated to each ward, with ward councillors having oversight. Ward 102 councillor David Potter said it was imperative that problems were logged and reference numbers received for each and every issue. "I welcome that ward councillors will have oversight and hopefully a few of the concerns that I have will be cleared up over time," said Potter. Shuping said there would be monthly meetings with stakeholders to measure productivity and identify outstanding problems.

LINDEN CBD GETS ITS OWN CAR GURAD INITIATIVE After speaking to businesses in the CBD area it was agreed that car guards should form an integral part of safety in the CBD and they should be utilised and empowered. Linden police head of crime prevention Captain Vermaak has done a background check on each car guard to ensure they are not involved in crime and has filed their identification. Captain Vermaak stated that when he started at the Linden station nine years ago, the area needed a civil initiative just like this. The car guards have the full support of the police, and the community should not support unregistered guards. Car guards are taught how to respond and use radios. Patrolmen are in direct contact with Fareed Hoosen, three ADT vehicles and the police sector commander Warrant Officer Sarel Bredenhand. The street guard initiative is on trial for three months, and public comments are welcomed.
