Mercury Magnet Spill Clean-Up Powder

MERCURY MAGNET™ SPILL CLEAN-UP POWDER

MERCURY MAGNET powder is the remedy for the fumes released by spills of mercury metal. Concentrations of mercury vapor greater than 0.1 mg/m3 are prohibited by law. Concentrations of up to 20 mg/m3 can go unoticed for long periods of time, creating a serious health hazard. O.S.H.A. inspections of laboratories and other area where mercury is used often check for free mercury vapor concentrations. For safety sake, clean up all mercury spills immediately with MERCURY MAGNET. MERCURY MAGNET turns liquid mercury in a solid nonvaporizing form. This is E.P.A. Best Available Technology for treating mercury spills. This solidified amalgam can be easily picked up using a common magnet.

DIRECTIONS

Wear an approved vapor mask, goggles and gloves. Avoid contact of eyes by MERCURY MAGNET powder. Ensure adequate ventilation. Sprinkle the powder over the mercury spill. Wet powder with water to form a paste. Ensure contact by scrubbing with a plastic scouring pad. Reaction is complete when all mercury is solidified and no drops of liquid mercury are observed. If necessary, repeat with more MERCURY MAGNET powder and water until all mobile liquid mercury. This solidified spil can be picked up using a common magnet or magnetic tool. The most effective method is to place a plastic bag inside out over the magent prior to collection. The bag can then be turned right side out, eliminating contact during clean up. See directions and safety cautions on container. In cases of mercury spills under water, such as drains, sumps, etc., sprinkle the MERCURY MAGNET powder into the drain, and allow to settle. Use a plumber’s helper or similar device, and gently agitate the liquid. Take care NOT to force the liquid beyond the trap. The amalgam can then be picked up using the magnetic tool without disassembly of the system.

Carpeted areas present a problem with mercury and its use in these areas should be avoided. If a spill does occur, the following method usually works without damage to the carpet. Test a small area with this procedure before cleaning up to determine its effect on the carpet. Pour a small ammount of MERCURY MAGNET powder in a plastic or glass container. Add water until powder is covered. Stir and allow to stand for five minutes. Drain off and discard excess water. Remoisten powder with water and proceed as above scrubbing powder to ensure total reaction. Pick up with magnet or approved vaccum.
