2012 Summer Reading Projects for Incoming Fourth and Fifth Graders

Due the First Week of School

Reading over the summer will help your child to maintain the progress they have made in the previous school year. This will ensure a successful start to the school year.

Steps to successful reading this summer:

1. Choose a book from the list below.

2. Make predictions about your book before you get started and then read the book over the summer.

3. As you read, make notes on the characters, important events, connections you make to the text, etc.

4. Choose one of the projects listed in this packet to complete.

5. Return your completed project to your teacher during the first week of school.

2012 Summer Reading Projects for Children Entering Fourth/Fifth Grade

After reading choices for your projects:

1. We often enjoy books because of the connections we make to them. Write a personal response addressing how you connected with the character(s) and/or events in the novel. Your response should show how you connected with the text citing several examples from the text. There are three forms of connection:

a. Text to self—you compared a character to yourself

b. Text to text—this book reminded you of another book you read

c. Text to world—this book made you think of something that you learned/heard about

2. Write another chapter or a continuation of the book.

3. Write a review of your book or poem with a summary and a recommendation for other students. (You can also read and write book reviews Scholastic’s website at http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/swyar/index.asp)

4. Create a poster including the following information:

a. Title, author, main characters

b. A brief summary of the book/poem

c. A brief response stating reasons why you liked or disliked the book/poem

d. A visual display that represents an important event in the book/poem

5. Create a media presentation (power point, brochure, blog, website) that includes the following information:

a. Title, author, main characters

b. A brief summary of the book/poem

c. A brief response stating reasons why you liked or disliked the book/poem

d. A visual display that represents an important event in the book/poem

6. Create a media presentation using other Web 2.0 tools like (Prezi http://prezi.com, Wordle http://www.wordle.net). a. Title, author, main characters

b. A brief summary of the book/poem

c. A brief response stating reasons why you liked or disliked the book/poem

d. A visual display that represents an important event in the book/poem

7. Complete the Story Map (graphic organizer) attached to this packet.
