A Study Abroad Program in Beijing for Summer 2008

Program Highlights A FLP program at Beijing University of Technology in Beijing during the summer of 2008:  Take two credited degree program courses offered by SJSU faculty, including Enterprise Software Overview (CMPE272) and Software Quality Testing (CMPE287/187).  Study, work, and interact with local Chinese students and faculty at Beijing University of Technology.  Take tours and experience Beijing, an ancient city with modern glamour, and the host of the 2008 Olympics.

Program Overview This study abroad summer program will be held at Beijing University of Technology (BJUT) from 6/5/08 to 7/2/08. Prior to the trip, the enrolled students will meet for a daylong orientation on Chinese society and culture. The class will be delivered on the campus of BJUT as off-campus class sessions, and all sessions will be conducted in English. The detailed course descriptions can be found at Computer Engineering website (http://www.ms.se.sjsu.edu/sse.htm).

Program Rational This FLP program is set-up to enhance SJSU students’ global learning experience and awareness. Since China is one of the fast growing countries with many global outsourcing projects and global production lines, it is rational to set-up our FLP program at China to provide SJSU students global learning experience in China. BJUT is located at Beijing and considered to be among the top 3% of the universities in China. Since the Software Engineering School of BJUT has well-equipped software engineering and quality assurance laboratories (which can be used to support the program free of charge), and it has been collaborated with SJSU in the past two years to support SJSU global education programs, such as GTI and FLP programs in 2005 and 2006, it is chosen as our base for launching the FLP program of the Computer Engineering Department in the summer of 2008. Through this program, SJSU students will learn how new enterprise technology and global software quality assurance for software projects, including global testing projects in China. This program not only provides SJSU students with wonderful global learning experience by studying and networking with local Chinese students, but also provides a great a chance to enhance their global awareness by living on the BJUT campus at Beijing in China.

Program Delivery Both classes in the program will be delivered by Dr. Jerry Gao and Dr. Weider Yu respectively, and lectured the classrooms on the BJUT campus. Students in both classes will be assigned letter grades based on their performance on homework assignments, exams, and project assignments. Detailed requirements for each class can be found in the attached class descriptions. Learning Objectives: The major learning objectives of this FLP programs are summarized as follows: - CMPE287/187: Students will learn basic software testing and quality assurance concepts, methods, and validation strategies, test criteria and standards, as well as software testing tools. Moreover, they will learn how mange and conduct a software test project from planning, test design, test execution, result analysis and reporting. - CMPE272: Students will learn basic concepts of enterprise software systems, including network operating systems, DBMS, transaction monitors, groupware, distributed objects, system management and the Web. Moreover different enterprise software standards will be covered, such as J2EE, CORBA, SQL, JDBC, and HTTP; and emerging technologies.

Course Enrollment and Eligibility The program is open to SJSU graduate and undergraduate students, who are currently major in computer engineering, software engineering, computer science, or MIS information engineering. In addition, all CSU students with computer related majors are also welcome. To enroll in this program, students must take one (or two) of the classes to receive SJSU academic credit units when they complete the courses. Both courses are listed as required courses for SJSU Software Engineering Program, and approved elective courses for other programs in the Computer Engineering Department.
