Directions: Read the following case study and answer the questions below. Personal computers did not exist before the 1980’s. First invented in the United States, personal computers quickly spread around the world. The spread of the Internet has been even more dramatic. Only a few decades ago, the World Wide Web was not available. Search engines had not been invented. Today, the Internet has transformed commerce, creating new ways for retailers and their customers to make transactions. It has also allowed businesses to manage the flow of productive resources and to market products, and for job seekers and recruiters to find one another. More recently, scientists and engineers have invented cell (mobile) phones. These have spread just as rapidly. Developing nations, which often lack cables for landline telephones, have especially benefited. In just a few years, cell phones have spread from America, Japan, and Europe to every region of the world. Cell phones have become so universal that six out of every seven people on Earth today possess a cell phone.
