Instructions for Windward Cottage, Murray Corner 1/4

ADDRESS AND DIRECTIONS

Address: 21 Lawrence Court Route 955 Little Shemogue, New Brunswick (pronounced “SHIM-o-gwee”) * Please note this is not a postal address and mail will not be delivered to the cottage

Telephone: There is no telephone service at the cottage. Cell phones DO work and many cottagers simply rely on them.

There is 911 service. Use the above address in case of emergency (also posted in the kitchen).

Directions: If you are approaching the cottage from Moncton, follow the signs for Shediac, then Cap Pelé, along the Trans-Canada highway. Take the Route 955/Murray Beach exit (turn left) after Cap Pelé. Lawrence Court will be on the left, about 10 minutes after this turn off. If you come to Lake’s General Store, you have gone too far by about 1 kilometre.

There are street signs: since Lawrence Court is a crescent, there are two entrances, both marked. If you miss the first, you can enter by the second one. The entrance closest to the store (furthest from Cap Pelé) is the most convenient one, but either will do.

When travelling, remember that although the cottage address is Little Shemogue, the area is known as Murray Corner and all road signs will say Murray Corner and/or Murray Beach.

WEATHER

While the weather is usually fine in the summer (ranging from warm to hot), it can be unpredictable, especially at night. Be sure to pack warm sleepwear and a warm sweater. There are plenty of wool blankets at the cottage.

WATER

Windward Cottage has an excellent well, pump, and septic system. However, like any cottage, the water system has a few peculiarities. Do your best to not overwhelm it: take short showers, do not run water unnecessarily, and, if possible, flush as little as possible.

One important concern: If the toilet is allowed to “run” (as it does sometimes), pressure will build up in the pump and it will stop working … and so will the water. Always check if the toilet is “running,” especially if you are leaving the cottage. Jiggling the handle should be enough to stop it. If it is allowed to run, the pump WILL stop working.

If the pump stops and you feel you can do this, turn off the pump (switch is behind the fridge), take a wrench (from the tool box in the storage room next to the bathroom) and release the nut on the left on the pump (the pump is in the little “house” near the end of the cottage). Water will spurt out, releasing the pressure, tighten the nut, turn the pump on, and the pump should work again. Call Kevin (see below) if this doesn’t work or you think you aren’t up to it. Instructions for Windward Cottage, Murray Corner 4/4

There is a pump on/off switch behind the fridge, should you need it for any reason.

There are containers of fresh water in the kitchen next to the fridge. DO NOT use salt water to prime the pump or the toilet tank, as this will cause the pipes to corrode.

GARBAGE PICK-UP

Garbage is collected each Thursday afternoon from the brown garbage bin at the end of the laneway. This is a shared, community garbage bin. Use the key provided to place garbage in bin the day before pick-up.

Garbage collection requires residents and cottagers to use green (wet) and blue (dry) garbage bags. Garbage containers in kitchen are labelled. The garbage containers in the bathroom is considered green (wet). A chart on the inside of one of the kitchen cupboards details the categories of waste, but to simplify things, think of blue (dry) garbage as recyclable items and green (wet) items as everything else.

WHEN LEAVING THE COTTAGE

Other renters will be using the cottage after your stay—please leave the cottage as you found it. Leave the keys on the kitchen counter.

1. Leave cottage tidy, swept, and the bathroom clean. (There are cleaning supplies under the kitchen sink.) Do not leave any dirty dishes behind. Do not leave any personal items behind. 2. Only leave non-perishable food items behind. 3. Put all garbage in the garbage bin at the end of the driveway and leave empty blue and green bags in the corresponding garbage bins. 4. Strip beds and place all dirty bed linens and towels in the white laundry baskets in the storage room next to the bathroom. Be sure to leave plenty of clean tea towels and wash cloths for future renters.
