Procedure for every group:

1-Pick up any application of your own choice as per your group id, 2- Explore application on your smartphone while in motion/ doing some other task/ while at rest, 3-Observe interface behavior, brainstorming, think about any user related issue, if you find out usability related flaw, write up. 4-Else perform again in moving environment/while doing some other task, 5- Go to step 3 (Observe behavior) 6- Now, if you still unable to find any flaw, take help from “Heuristic List Definition with examples” where you will find “definitions” a little bit explanation with examples See one by one and if you find one or more that represent your observation. 7- Select these violations and look up corresponding heuristic number in the same table. Enter heuristic number (only number) in 4th column of solution table. Also mention the violation in third column. 8- Keeping in view each violation nature, you are required to assign severity number of each usability related flaw in 5th column 9- Write up reason of this assignment of severity number in 6th column 10- Write up environment in 7th column 11- Go to step 1 and repeat the whole procedure for other application. 12- Go to link of related Category Application’s Survey Form and fill up with the same values. Marks Distribution:  Each application has 25 marks. If you perform better, practically do it by yourself, identify accurate flaws. Then, you will be given full marks.  If a student submitted solution on LMS and fails to submit solution on Google docs form link. He/ She will be given no credit and vice versa.  At the end of this assignment, there is another survey form. It’s about rating of usefulness of proposed set of heuristics. It is highly suggested to fill up positively (agree and strongly agree). If you have some opposite observation, please let me know with reason.

Assignment:

You are required to execute tasks related to above said mobile applications (already defined in previous assignments) but this time evaluate apps with respect to multi touch gesture interaction. It would be nice if you explore the whole application and share your experience and fill up table accordingly.

Your core work “In this assignment, you target evaluating the multi-touch gestures for the current smartphone through specific heuristics.” Target evaluating the multi-touch gestures (how much these gestures are useful?) For the current smartphone mobile applications through specific heuristics.” Dear Students, It’s a challenging task. I hope you understand different multitouch gestures like tap, double tap, slide, swipe, pinch and some others and their respective meanings i.e. select, copy, zoom, rotate, opens up, scroll etc. Tap(means)= open, tap and hold= right click, slide:=scroll, Tap, tap (hold), slide= drag an item/select text, Pinch= Zoom in/out, Rotate= rotate things, swipe to select (slide opposite to scroll)= select……….. and some others like tilt, flick etc

(Note: Please listen audio file and see the announcement page on regular basis for above said). I shall try to provide you a complete understanding of heuristics, their semantics and applications in audio and textual form. “ Multitouch gesture introduction” an audio file is available on LMS. You can access via LMS from” Download” Section.

Question: Your assignment is to identify “violation” from your assigned heuristics. To achieve this, you should perform task and then check first heuristic definition (multitouch). Brainstorming and critical evaluation is required at this stage. You are required to check each step and see what are/could be different multitouch gestures involve at this step? (for example, while moving if you want to zoom in any image, there exist three different multitouch gestures like double tap, pinch, tilt……so your work is to use all these and mention which one is more useful in motion and why?). Is there any problem while using these multitouch gestures? While achieving task outcome, how much these are supportive? And at what extent these multitouch gestures need improvement? I hope you will find flaws. Same procedure will follow for other heuristics assigned to you. Try to evaluate while in motion.

You are required to send me the solution in two different ways. It’s mandatory to upload your solution file on LMS as well as fill up same fields on Google Form. Missing in any mode may deduct your score.

Summary:

Every expert t will perform each task in sitting as well as in moving/dynamic state.

The following 0 to 4 rating scale can be used to rate the severity of usability problems: 0 = I don't agree that this is a usability problem at all 1 = Cosmetic problem only: need not be fixed unless extra time is available on project 2 = Minor usability problem: fixing this should be given low priority 3 = Major usability problem: important to fix, so should be given high priority 4 = Usability catastrophe: imperative to fix this before product can be released (If you are given a task to rate the severity of usability problems of this violation. Choose any one from 0,1,2,3,4. (Note: for multiple heuristics violation, assign multiple rating. Proposed Heuristics List:

1. Visibility of system status (Inostroza et al. 2012; Nielsen, 1995): Gestures other than tapping or sliders are normally not visible to users. The system should visibly, clearly, and concisely provide feedback for multi-touch gestures feedback. 2. Matching between the system and the real world behaviour (Nielsen, 1995): A multi-touch gesture in a mobile app should enable the functionality that matches the real world. For example, performing a left-swipe gesture should bring the next object from the right side (i.e., showing the next picture from the right side). 3. Navigation and user control (Nielsen, 1995): Many times, users can perform unwanted gestures on the touch screen of smartphones and tablets (e.g., tapping, swipe, etc.), which could bring the system to another state. The system should support undo and redo for a clear navigation. 4. Consistency and standards (Nielsen, 1995): A certain gesture should perform the same kind of action throughout the mobile app and a certain action should be performed by the same gesture throughout the app (e.g., pinch-out gesture for zoom-in the map throughout the map navigation app). Further, it is better not to conflict a gesture’s operation with the underlying OS standard gestures’ operations. 5. Realistic error management (Chuan, 2014): Users may not always be precise in performing multi-touch gestures on mobile devices, due to the direct usage of fingers on touch screens. Expecting much precision during gestures interaction leads to mistakes; therefore, the system should allow wide margins in gesture interaction. 6. Allow configuration options and shortcuts (Nielsen, 1995): Experienced users may prefer to configure gestures as per their own requirements (e.g., double tapping on a particular area for direct zoom-in a specific part of the map). Therefore, the system should also provide configuration options and shortcuts to manage gestures for expert users. 7. Aesthetic and minimalist design (Nielsen, 1995): Multi-touch gestures provide an intuitive way to interact with mobile touch- screens, which encourages users to explore the underlying interactions. Therefore, the system should avoid providing unnecessary information about the supported gestures on mobile app interfaces. 8. Help and documentation (Nielsen, 1995): Multi-touch gestures could be difficult to understand for new users. Therefore tutorials, documentation, and help should be provided to explain the usage of the supported gestures. 9. Joy of use (Miranda, 2014): How much a certain gesture is enjoyable (e.g., using two fingers rotation gesture to rotate the underlying object like a map or a picture in the app), as well as the avoidance of making negative user experience (e.g., flicking over a photo album but moving the pictures slowly). 10. Learnability (Chuan, 2015): The used multi-touch gestures should be easy to perform and easy to learn for users (e.g., using two fingers to rotate an underlying object rather than using a complicated gesture). 11. Cognitive workload (Chuan, 2014): The system should support gestures with less cognitive workload. Therefore, it should avoid recalling the complicated hard finger configuration gesture that could result in increasing user memory load. 12. Fatigue (Chuan, 2015): Due to involvement of hands, users may get tired after a long usage. Therefore, the system should use as precise multi-touch gestures as it could be rather than making them unnecessary longer (e.g., where tap can work then there is no need for double tap). 13. Recognition rather than recall (Nielsen, 1995; Tognazzini, 2014): The user should not need to remember a specific gesture usage from one part to another. It should be obvious to recognize the underlying gesture for interaction with the underlying object. 14. Do not lie to the user (Bevan, 1997): A multi-touch gesture should perform the action as it is supposed to do in normal circumstances (e.g., swipe left is normally use for moving the right object to the focus part rather than any other activity) and should not refer to some unexpected behaviour. 15. User awareness about task steps while in motion

A general perception of user is: they found that “clue” that help user to provide “roadmap” is missing in mobile apps.

For example, an image in Microsoft Windows Photo Viewer, user understand interface, select rotate button and click (perform) to execute task in desktop paradigm. Now, let’s see, what’s extra in mobile paradigm?

A. After visualize the image, user stuck for a moment, as there is no explicit clue/options available about different options like zoom, rotate etc. User should memorize his/her actions. B. Next additional load is to memorize the procedure of how to perform particular interaction i.e. Rotate multi touch gesture interaction. C. Another extra step is the analysis, which one (among multiple multi touch gesture like pinch, double tap, and tilt all for zooming) is more appropriate for interaction in a specific context of use in the absence of clearly marked available options. For example in Desktop an action like zoom is available at multiple positions. User execute which one is more convenient to him/her. D. This three step (A, B, C) additional workload adds up when user perform another task while in motion like driving, buying etc.

Thus, system should provide user “cue” at different stages of task accomplishment for better user experience.

16. Fingertip-size controls Relatively large fingertip-size controls for multi touch gesture execution, helped users to select functions and menus in mobile applications.
