Personal statement My research interests generally lies in mosquitoes; their biology and the control of vector mosquitoes particularly on the ecology control of Aedes mosquito. From the beginning, I have always interested in linking and combining the knowledge on Aedes mosquito, the vector of dengue and its impact on the community. The focus of my work is being sought by people who works in vector control and have been referred on many occasions pertaining to the issue of mosquitoes and dengue by Ministry of Health, Department of Health, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, and few industries such as BASF a renowned international company, EntogeneX Sdn. Bhd., New Wave Communications Sdn. Bhd. and many more. As the Head of Industry and Community Partnerships, I have conducted many community services programs. One of them, the latest is the Post-Flood Humanitarian Mission to Gua Musang Kelantan. We conducted clinical psychology evaluation and therapy to the flood survivors particularly the schoolchildren. Besides that, we also do the cleaned up of the schools and public places in Kampung Pasir Tumbuh, Kampung Bertam Lama and Kampung Limau Kasturi.

My research has subsequently evolved to look at factors contributing to the sustainability of Communication of Behavioral Impact (COMBI) which has become a tool to empower the community to combat the dengue among them. There are few success story in my attempt to help the community combating the dengue fever. One of them is in Desa Kolej, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. The place used to have outbreak of dengue fever cases, however, once the COMBI team had been established which I had become their trainer, up until now the place is free from dengue cases. At the moment, I have trained 150 individuals who would become ‘the dengue busters’ for combating dengue in Selangor.

Another stream of research work that I have been active in is product development and quality control of natural repellants. My work in this area has been largely driven by the availability of Malaysian natural resources that works equivalent with the chemical driven repellants. This enable me to produce a product which has been patented under trade secret with PIK which has been selected by Agency Innovative Malaysia (AIM), under the Prime Minister’s Office Department as top 30 most innovative products from universities in 2012. Under UKMTech watchful eye, this product has been highly sought by public and this is another journey I want to explore to bring this product to the international level.

My research is relevant to the nation; a journey that aims to increase our knowledge in this dynamic and complex world and finding answers to the community’s problem.
