1. The President of the United States is not directly elected by each person who votes.

2. Each state is given a certain number of “electoral votes” and those votes go to electing the President.

3. The number of electoral votes depends on the population of each state.

4. Louisiana gives 8 electoral votes to the candidate who receives the majority vote from the people who live here. (2 US Senators & 6 US Representatives = 8)

5. Louisiana used to get 9 electoral votes, but due to lack of increase in population, we lost a representative in the 2010 census.

6. The number of electoral votes is recalculated every 10 years due to population changes. The year 2020 will be the next census year.

7. There are 538 total electoral votes. A candidate must receive 270 electoral votes to be elected President.
