EIGH Postdoctoral Fellows Training Grant Page 3 Part 2: Research Plan - The Research Plan consists of the following items, as applicable:
Specific Aims - State concisely the goals of the proposed research and summarize the outcomes, including the impact that the results of the proposed research will exert on the research field and global health. Limit one page.
Research Strategy – Organize using the headings below. Limit four pages.
Significance – Explain the importance of the problem or critical barrier to progress in the field that the proposed project addresses.;
Innovation – Describe any novel theoretical concepts, approaches, or methodologies.
Approach – Describe the overall strategy, methodology, and analyses to be used to accomplish the specific aims of the project. Include how the data will be collected, analyzed, and interpreted, as well as any resource sharing plans, as appropriate. Discuss potential problems, alternative strategies, and benchmarks for success anticipated to achieve the aims. If the project is in the early stages of development, describe any strategy to establish feasibility, and address the management of high risk aspects of the proposed work. Point out any procedures, situations, or materials that may be hazardous to personnel and precautions to be exercised.

EIGH Postdoctoral Fellows Training Grant Page 4 Part 3: Training/Mentoring Plan (limit three pages)
Overview Provide an overview of the proposed training/mentoring plan for the postdoctoral fellow that you will recruit. Include information about courses, curricula, seminars, workshops, or tutorials that will be incorporated into the training program and mentored research experiences and activities. Describe how training plans will be tailored to the needs of the prospective candidates, taking into account their past experiences and competencies. Programs should provide all trainees with the additional professional development skills and career guidance:
1. Instruction and training in grant writing in order to apply successfully future career development and independent research support. Instruction in laboratory and project management. Fellows are required to submit at least one grant proposal in conjunction with this training. 2. Responsible conduct of research ethics training. 3. Presentation of scientific research. Trainees are required to annually present their research findings at one of the events sponsored by the EIGH.
PI/Mentors Experience
The PI mentor (and any co-mentors) should provide a listing of all current and pending research and research support specifically available to the trainee. Include funding source, title of project, name of principal investigator, dates, and award amounts.
The PI (and any co-mentors) should provide information on the total number of predoctoral and postdoctoral trainee’s currently and previously mentored by them. Provide information on present employment and titles for up to three representative former trainees.
Describe, in general terms, the complementary expertise and experience of other faculty you expect to be involved in training and mentoring of the postdoctoral trainee.
Evaluation Plan
Describe an evaluation plan to review and determine the effectiveness of your training program. This should include how you plan to assess scholars’ career development and progression, including metrics such as publications, and subsequent positions. Specified evaluation metrics should be tied to the goals of the program. Evaluation results may be requested in future applications and/or be used by the EIGH to sponsor the submission of larger training grants.

The EIGH will coordinate advertising and recruitment of potential candidates. This will include position postings at appropriate venues. Describe the criteria to be used for candidate evaluation in the selection of the trainee, including plans for enhancing diversity. Attach a sample of the position description/advertisement that you would propose to use for recruitment (limit one page).
EIGH Postdoctoral Fellows Training Grant Page 6 Protection of Human Subjects - Projects engaged in human subjects research (i.e., interaction with a living person or obtaining private information from existing data, documents, records, or diagnostic specimens) need not have their projects approved by the Human Subjects Institutional Review Board (HSIRB) prior to the submission of the grant request.
Vertebrate Animals – IACUC approval is not required prior to the submission of the grant request.
Select Agent Research – If select agents are involved, include select agent approval documentation for the laboratories involved.
Consortium/Contractual Arrangements – Explain the programmatic, fiscal, and administrative arrangements to be made between the applicant organization and the partner/consortium organization.
Letters of Support – Provide all appropriate letters of support, including any letters necessary to demonstrate the support of partners/collaborators and consortium participants.
Biographical Sketch - Must contain the biographical sketches of all individuals listed on the Personnel page. The biographical sketch may not exceed 4 pages [standard NIH format is recommended - http://grants2.nih.gov/grants/funding/424/index.htm].

EIGH Postdoctoral Fellows Training Grant Page 7 Scored Review Criteria Reviewers will consider each of the three review criteria below in the determination of scientific and technical merit, and give a separate score for each.
Research Training Plan. Is the proposed research plan of high scientific quality, does it contribute to global health, and does it relate to the applicant's training plan? Will the research training plan provide the applicant with individualized and supervised experiences that will develop research skills needed for his/her independent and productive research career? Training/Mentoring Plan. Does the proposed research training plan have the potential to provide the fellow with the requisite individualized and supervised experiences that will develop his/her research skills? Does the proposed research training have the potential to serve as a sound foundation that will lead the fellow to an independent and productive career? Does the applicant provide a plan for providing training in the Responsible Conduct of Research? Does the applicant provide a sound plan for evaluating and tracking their training program? Does the applicant provide a sound plan for recruitment of the best trainees? Mentor. Are the qualifications of the mentor, collaborator(s), and/or consultant(s), including their complementary expertise and previous experience in fostering the training of fellows, appropriate for the proposed research project? Are the research facilities, resources (e.g., equipment, laboratory space, computer time, subject populations), and training opportunities adequate and appropriate? Is the laboratory environment for the scientific development of the applicant of high quality, and is there appropriate commitments to fostering the fellows' training as an independent and productive researcher.
