Beaver Dam High School Syllabus

Department: Mathematics Course Resources: Glencoe Geometry (2014)

School Year: 2015-2016

Course: Geometry Prerequisites: Algebra

Grade Level: 9-12

Required Materials: Pencils, binder with 5 dividers and loose leaf paper or notebook, Graphing calculator (recommended TI-83 or TI-84) or any scientific calculator, colored pen for correcting, dry erase marker

Course Description: Geometry begins with a comprehensive study of the building blocks of Geometry: points, lines and planes. Students will then study plane and space figures: triangles, polygons circles, and solids. Some of the other topics covered are congruent and similar figures, area, volume, trigonometry, and coordinate geometry. Throughout the course, students will be working on logical reasoning and geometric proofs as well as performance tasks to deepen their understanding of geometry.

Units Covered: Tools of Geometry, Reasoning and Proof, Triangle Congruence and Similarity, Trigonometry, Polygons, Transformations, Circles, and Platonic Solids.

Summative Assessments: Formative Assessments:

● Weekly Assessments ● Warm-ups

● Unit Assessments (Big Kahunas) ● Homework

● Performance Tasks ● Daily Work

School-wide Grading Procedures:

Assessments 85%

● Formative 30% (of assessment grade)

● Summative 70% (of assessment grade)

Cumulative Final 15%

Formative Assessments: (this shall constitute 30% of the term grade)

Our goal is to help students see how they are grasping the material. We will use homework and other daily work for students to see how well they understand the topics and which topics they need more time with. Homework will be worth 20 points and will be graded weekly on showing work and correctness. Weekly Assessments: Weekly assessments will be given every Friday and will be worth 30 points (10 points per section). A weekly assessment consists of 3 parts: 2 review sections and 1 section of new material. The newest topic is placed in the last section of the quiz. The next time a weekly assessment is given, this topic will move up one spot to the second section. This process continues until three weekly assessments have been given, at which time that topic would “drop off” of the quiz. Students who show they learn the material over time are able to replace lower scores with the average of their last attempt at a section and the Unit Assessment (Big Kahuna).

Unit Assessments (Big Kahunas): At the completion of a unit a longer, comprehensive assessment will be given. The point value of this assessment will be determined based on the number of topics in that particular unit of study. Each section will still be worth 10 points, and can be used to help demonstrate students’ mastery of content.

Cumulative Final: At the end of the semester, there will be a cumulative final exam. Students will not be allowed to retake this assessment. This will comprise 15% of the semester grade.
