Human Anatomy Study Guide: Respiratory System
Know the four distinct processes involved in respiration and what specifically happens in each.
Be able to explain – How the respiratory and circulatory systems are “linked”.
Identify and know the functions of the following:
Nasal cavity- What happens to the air brought into this cavity? Nasopharynx Soft palate Hard palate Oropharynx Glottis Laryngopharynx Larynx Vocal cords Trachea
Know the structure of the larynx and function:
Hyoid bone Epiglottis- specific tissue making up structure Thyroid cartilage- specific tissue making up structure Cricoid cartilage - specific tissue making up structure Arytenoid cartilage Trachea- specific tissue making up “rings” of this structure specific tissue which lines this structure
Know the structure and functions of the lower respiratory tract:
Trachea Primary bronchus Secondary bronchus Terminal bronchi Bronchiole Alveolar ducts Alveoli- tissue which makes up these structures Capillaries
Note the diagram showing the relationship of the alveoli and the pulmonary capillaries
Note the muscles involved in the respiratory process
