New Course Proposal Form This form is to be filled out for all new courses. The phrase “new course” means any course to be added to the Georgetown College Catalog and all reorganizations of, or major changes in, courses listed in the Catalog. This proposal must be presented to the Curriculum Committee by mid term of the semester preceding the first offering of the proposed course. DESCRIPTION OF NEW COURSE

Exact Catalog description of course: This course is intended to serve as a capstone experience for seniors with a major in Philosphy, Politics, and Economics. In consultation with the instructor, students will select research areas that reflect their interests, skills, and knowledge acquired in their exploration of the three disciplines, with particular emphasis on their area of emphasis. In addition to this seminar paper/project, students will engage in class activites that will foster an integrative understanding of the three disciplines. Prerequisites: Senior standing and completion of at least 39 hours of coursework toward a PPE major.

That is, what is the rationale for introducing this course at this time? It is intended to serve as the capstone experience to integrate interdisciplinary experience s. Is it to be an allied course in any major or minor? Will it meet any general education requirement?) It will be required of students majoring in PPE.
FACULTY AND STUDENTS FOR THE NEW COURSE 1) Which faculties are qualified to teach this course? (List qualifications like graduate study, interest, previous experience teaching similar courses, planned study to prepare to teach this course, etc.) Melissa Scbeier--PhD (Texas A&M), MA (San Diego State), BA (Univeristy of Californi a/Santa Cruz); has taught political theory, modern political thought, ancient and medieval political thought, quantitative methods, and comparative politics courses, all of which indicate both a competence in Political science, which is one of the three primary fields in the major, but also a capacity for interdisciplinary integration. She has taught research methods, which will be significant in guiding students through a senior capstone course. Conference parcipation includes work that crosses disciplines between political science and economics ("Individual-Level Variation in Economic Voting in Central Europe"; "Influence of Party Platforms, Personal Economic Viability, and Objective Economic Indicators on Party Support in Eastern Europe")
Guilhere Silva--PhDUniversity of Southern California, MA University of Southern California, MA Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro; Law Degree, Universidade Candido Mendes; graduate coursework includes courses in Economic Bargaining Theory and Practice; Politics of the World Economy; Political Economy of Global Telecommunication and Information; Politics of International Monetary and Trade Relations), demonstrating interdisciplinary interest and study.
2) What is the expected student interest in this course? (How frequently will the course be offered--each semester, each fall only, spring only, summer only, alternate falls, etc. and what is the expected enrollment?) PPE 450 will be offered As Needed until sufficient numbers of students enrolled in the m ajor warrant a regular offering.
3) Will the addition of this course require any increase in faculty load? If so, will this increase be met with new personnel, overload work for current, part-time faculty or other arrangement (please explain)? In the short term, until numbers in the program grow, the course can be covered through unused capacity in one of the subdisciplines; in the past several semesters, we have had faculty who have been short of a full load in both Economics and Political Science. In the long term, if numbers grow, we would anticipate hiring an individual with multidisciplinary capacity (a political economist/political philosopher, etc)
