I. GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION 1 Course Number: PHED 1254 Course Title: Theory of Basketball Credit Hours: 2 Prerequisite: None Division/Discipline: Liberal Arts and Sciences/ Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Course Description: The history and development of the game of basketball and systems used in various sections are stressed through lectures, reports, and discussions. The principles of conditioning and strategy are emphasized.

II. CLASSROOM POLICY

Students and faculty of Barton County Community College constitute a special community engaged in the process of education. III. COURSE AS VIEWED IN THE TOTAL CURRICULUM

Theory of Basketball is an approved general education course at BCCC, which can be used to fulfill one of the Physical Education activity requirements or elective. It can be used for credit for BCCC Graduation, and transfer to institutions of higher education. The transferability of all college courses will vary among institutions, and perhaps even among departments, colleges, or programs within an institution. Institutional requirements may also change without prior notification. Students are responsible to obtain relevant information from intended transfer institutions to insure that the courses the student enrolls in are the most appropriate set of courses for the transfer program.

IV. ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING / COURSE OUTCOMES

Barton County Community College is committed to the assessment of student learning and to quality education. Assessment activities provide a means to develop an understanding of how students learn, what they know, and what they can do with their knowledge. Results from these various activities guide Barton, as a learning college, in finding ways to improve student learning.

Course Outcomes

1. To explore the fundamentals of basketball and to learn coaching points necessary to teach this phase of the game.

2. To develop a beginning philosophy about coaching in general.

3. To become familiar with the different offenses and defenses used in the game of basketball today.

4. To look at some of the technical strategies that a coach needs in today’s game.
