Introduction to Microcomputer Applications (CIS 110) Introduces the student to microcomputers and software applications. Windows, word processing, and electronic spreadsheets basics are presented. Prerequisites: Ability to use a keyboard
General Comments : This syllabus is a general guide to CIS 110N for winter quarter and I reserve the right to make changes, adjustments and correct mistakes. This shall be a great class. Concerning the agenda before us, we might consider carefully the words of the poet:

Please note: if you need help during office hours, but for whatever reason cannot meet during those times, then please schedule an appointment. You may also come for help at any time. If the door is shut and it is outside of office hours, then I am either not there or in a time bind. But office hours are the best time.

Winter lab hours are 7:30 AM to 8:45 PM Monday through Thursday and 7:30 AM to 3:45 PM Friday. Labs 1, 2, and 3 will be open on Saturdays from noon to 3:45 p.m.
Lab time for CIS 110 will be provided to so that each student can learn to use a computer running Windows XP as well as the applications Word and Excel.

The Class Text: There are three texts required fro CIS 110. They are: 1) Computer Concepts and Windows by Russel Stolins 2) Microsoft Word 2002, Level 1 by Favro and Stolins 3) Microsoft Excel 2002, Level 1 by Favro
Course Description: CIS 110 introduces the student to microcomputers and software applications. Windows, word processing, and electronic spreadsheets basics are presented.
CIS 110 is intended to give students a basic introduction to basic concepts and applications used on personal computers in offices, schools, etc. We will spend some time concerning the history of computers, the role they play and future trends. Information and concepts are presented in the text, during lectures and in the context of lab assignments. Some projects may require addition time beyond that which is scheduled for the lab. Access to the college computers is available during posted hours or you can work on your home computer.
This course assumes that the students have little knowledge and little experience with micro computers. However, each student is expected to have basic familiarity with input and output devices, like keyboards, mice, monitors and printers. Each student should also have basic typing skills. Those students who are more experiences are encouraged to help those in the lab who have had less exposure to computers.
CIS 110 is only introductory in nature. A rich set of other courses are available to give a full depth of knowledge and training in each specific topic area covered in this course.
3 Each student is expected to buy a floppy disk or a USB drive (flash disk). Be sure to back up your work so that if the college network loses your work, you will still have a copy archived elsewhere.
Communication: Communication, written as well as spoken, is one of the premier skills. Part of a robust problem solving methodology and well conceived design spring from neatness and organization. Disorganized work is too often a symptom of equally disorganized thoughts. Programming and text assignments, etc., that show inadequate levels of organization will not fare as well as work that is well done. Please do not give to me to grade an assignment whose pages have been ripped from a spiral binder. Do not dog ear your work; instead use a stapler. Commit to a uniform paper size. Identify each assignment with your name, class information, what the assignment is and the date.
Academic Integrity: Work submitted by a student should reflect his or her own thought and intellectual property. All other work should be cited. The following should be avoided: cheating, which is willfully using or attempting to use in the pursuit of any academic exercise materials, study aids, information, computational devices, etc., that have not been authorized by an instructor; fabrication, which is the willful or unauthorized falsification or invention of any data and information, citation or document or lying during an investigation concerning cheating, fabrication or plagiarism; plagiarism, which is willfully representing the words, thoughts and intellectual property of another as one’s own. Under United States copyright law, any document that is created, such as a mathematics assignment or computer program is automatically protected by copyright. Any student copying the assignments of other will be in violation of the copyright.
Minimizing Classroom Disruptions: During the lecture and lab time slots, please deactivate cellular telephones and pagers. During the lecture, please listen quietly, both to myself and others when given an opportunity to move forward the class agenda. Please do not engage in private, autonomous conversations during the lecture. This is very disruptive, especially when the subject of the day is how to model event-driven, business systems.
Individual logins: Please note well the following information concerning access to the computers in the Instructional Computing Center. Beginning fall quarter all students will be required to enter individual logins to use computers in the Instructional Computing Center. To obtain their login information, students will need to bring their LCC student photo ID cards to the Help Desk in Lab 2 (AAR 110). No login information will be given without photo ID. They will be given their logins and passwords by the lab assistants, Cindy, or me. This change coincides with an upgrade to Windows XP and Office XP.
Once logged in, students will be able to save their work in their own My Documents folders.
Please remind your students that if they wish to use the LCC lab computers, they must obtain their login information prior to doing so. The generic logins have been disabled.
4 Warning: do not rely on the system to archive your work. You are responsible for provide the documentation for each assignment in a timely fashion; viz., on the due date. If the system loses your work, that is your problem and not mine. Archive it on a Zip or floppy disk.
Course Objctives: Review basic concepts as necessary from Chapters 1-16 Computer Systems – Components, peripherals, disk and file management Windows graphical user interface File structures and manipulation Windows Operating System™ Examine the components of a personal computer system and discuss the criteria for evaluating a microcomputer system Identify the major categories of application software Discuss the purposes of and differences between application software and systems software Use basic functions of a word processing application to create letters and other documents Use basic functions of an electronic spreadsheet application to create simple worksheets
Course Completion Requirements: Read assigned materials Complete and hand in assignments on time. Assignments will be due at the end of class or as scheduled in tentative schedule. Complete all quizzes and tests as scheduled Tests must be done at scheduled times unless prior arrangements have been made with instructor. Only serious circumstances can cause delays in scheduled test times. Do all assigned work in Text including Projects, review assignments, and Lab assignments at end of chapter, and internet assignments as assigned. The Instructor reserves the right to make changes to content and schedule. I will notify you of these changes as far in advance as possible if it is necessary to change.
Procedure for Turning in Work All assignments turned in as hardcopy, if possible, should be labeled in the following format: Name Assignment Name Date CIS 110 Lower Columbia College Term Winter 2005
I will also want to see in the lab your work. At that time I will look at your work on the computer and then collect a hardcopy of the work.
5 Testing Tests are both application and theory. Notes and book may be used for application tests. No notes or books may be used for theory tests. Theory tests are multiple answer/true/false/short answer. Application tests will be completed in class and require creation of an appropriate electronic document for submission. Tests may be retaken one time if the student obtains less than a C-. Before retaking a test, the student should do the following: o Review test with instructor before retaking. o Select appropriate tasks and or exercises from the text. o You have one week to complete the retake on a test. o The highest grade possible on retakes is a C.
Grading Policies Grades are based on completion of all assigned work. Each missing assignment will lower the grade by one grade. Grades for each assignment are based on correctness for assigned task. Final grades include assignments, tests, attendance. Grade Breakdown Assignments 60% Tests 35% Attendance 5%
Student Success: Attending all class times is a critical part of being successful in any college class. Attendance will be taken; as this is part of your participation grade points. Complete all work assigned and be sure you fully understand what you are reading from text, topics covered in presentations, and hands on lab work done. This course is designed for each student to succeed, but the quality and level of learning is directly related to the effort put forth.
If you find you are having trouble with the requirements of this course, please see me immediately so we can discuss how to help you succeed to your fullest potential. At times it may take longer then intended to complete some components of this course for some students. If you need tutoring or more one on one help then I can provide in the time allowed, the tutoring center is a resource available to you.
Class Work: Various kinds of assignments and tests comprise the graded material of this course. These are detailed in the following table.
Concept Paper: Find an article concerning any area having to do with computers (not including commercial descriptions of products or software) at least three pages in length. Then write a one page paper that summarizes the article. Include a copy of the article with the paper that you write.

You may mind storm together when working on the various assignments, except for tests, but make sure that you complete work that is original and is uniquely yours. If you rely on help to understand a difficult concept, re-forge it on the anvil of your own thinking and make the material your own. Do not copy the work of others.
Grading: The following table shows how the various categories of assignments are graded. Note that text assignments are not graded, but it is expected that each student will study and solve the assigned problems to facilitate understanding of the text concepts.
I reserve the right to change weights as I see fit. Grades are assigned according to the following table. Let x be a grade as a percentage.

Course Policies: Missed Classes: The student is responsible for obtaining material distributed on class days when he/she was absent. This can be done through contacting a classmate who was present or by contacting the instructor during office hours or other times. Missed or late quizzes can not be made up under any circumstances but with good cause and adequate notice, an early quiz may be given.
Need for Assistance: If you have any condition, such as a physical or learning disability, which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as I have outlined it, or which will require academic accommodations, please notify me as soon as possible.
