NC SCOS Objective(s):
Competency Goal 4-The learner will apply strategies and skills to create oral, written, and visual texts.
-4.03 Make oral and written presentations using visual aids with an awareness of purpose and audience.
Competency Goal 5-The learner will apply grammar and language conventions to communicate effectively.
-5.01 Use correct capitalization (e.g., names of languages, nationalities, musical compositions) and punctuation (e.g., commas in a series, commas in direct address, commas and quotation marks in dialogue, apostrophes in possessives).
-5.05 Use visual (orthography) and meaning-based strategies as primary sources for correct spelling Materials:
-Poster boards prepared with sentence parts on them from the book How Tia Lola Came to Stay (with holes punched in the top and strings tied so that the students can wear them around their necks.) *Have the page number that the sentence is on written down to use as a reference.
-Poster board (can be cut into smaller pieces, also with holes punched so they can be tied) with different punctuation marks; a period, exclamation mark, comma, question mark, semi-colon, quotation marks, etc.
-How Tia Lola Came to Stay
Instructions/Procedures:
1. Choose several students to stand at the front of the classroom wearing the sentence strips.
2. Have another student choose a card for one of the punctuation marks and stand next to the
students with the sentence strips.
3. They are to line up in the order that the sentence would be written on paper.
4. Continue having students choose and place the cards needed for punctuation until the sentence has been completed.
5. Have the class agree or disagree with the placements.
6.Repeat the process with a variety of sentences.
