Lab Exercise #1: Exploring the Media, Live CD, Installation procedures

Part 1: Live CD Startup and Install (Ubuntu, Fedora)

1. Review PC procedures w/instructor, CMOS Setup 2. Either install Windows or boot Windows and Login 3. Install or shrink Windows partition to size specified by instructor 4. To shrink partition: Go to Control Panel, type in partition at the search box GSelect Create and format hard disk partitions. Resize the partition to ½ of the hardrive. 5. Boot Ubuntu Live CD 6. Review bootable USB procedure (instructor) 7. Install to disk (40 GB of hardrive) as single partition. Specify root, user1 with password “password” 8. Review desktop Favorites, Applications, Computer

Part 2: Linux Installation and Desktop

Following procedures in the LINUX installation guide, install the Gnome Workstation version of Fedora on the assigned workstation with the following values:

1. Boot FC 15 DVD 2. Skip the media check, Hit ENTER at the prompt 3. Select the following values: - Select English as the language - Select Basic Storage Devices - Hostname: studentnn; nn is the workstation # - Configure TimeZone for US Central Time (Chicago) - Set root password as “password” (ignore the doublequotes when typing the password) - Select Create Custom Layout. Allocate: /(ext4), /boot (ext4), /home (ext3), swap using sizes, formats specified by Instructor - Select GRUB Bootloader on Master Boot Record (/dev/sda) - Select Graphical Desktop, Add Fedoraxx and Fedoraxx Update repositories. - Select Customize Now: and select options indicated by the Instructor - (Installation Proceeds). This takes about 30- 45 minutes. - Reboot - Accept the EULA - Add account: “user1” with the same password as Root - Set Date and Time - Do not send hardware profile. - If GNOME3 fails to load, ignore it. - Double click on network icon in upper right hand corner. Connect all network interfaces. Check their status. 4. Fedora Setup: - Login as user1, “su –“ - Firewall disable - chkconfig --level 12345 iptables off - SELinux disable - SELINUX=disabled in /etc/selinux/config Lab Exercise #1: Exploring the Media, Live CD, Installation procedures

Part 3: Exploring the Desktop and basic tools

1. Boot to Fedora - Set a new desktop and screen saver - Set Remote control options - View Office apps - View Network - Mount a CD, mount a floppy - Set Security Level and Firewall - Check Services, System Log and System Monitor - Go to a terminal prompt. - “su –“ to root - “rpm” to query installed products -“yum” to query installed products

2. Boot to Ubuntu - Set a new desktop and screen saver - Set Remote control options - View Network Tools - View Network - Mount a CD, mount a floppy - Set Security Level and Firewall - Check Services, System Log and System Monitor - Go to a terminal prompt. - “sudo su” - “dpkg” to review installed products - “apt-get” to review installed products
