Scope and Sequence Temple Avodah Religious School

Hebrew and Prayer:

Grades K-2: Reading readiness for Hebrew. Recognition of letters, sounds, vowels Introduction of Hebrew prayer by rote: Shema, candle blessings, Shabbat table service Opening lines of four questions

Grade 3: Decoding of Hebrew vowels and consonants Some rote prayers and blessings Four questions Exposure to familiar prayers for Shabbat services

Grade 4: Review of decoding skills Working towards fluency using texts of prayers

Grade 5: Expectation of greater fluency in prayers for Shabbat, etc

Grade 6: Fluent reading and chanting of prayers and blessings required for Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Grade 7: Review of Bnai Mitzvah prayers, introduction to Modern spoken Hebrew.

Customs and Traditions

Holidays are discussed and celebrated in every grade at the appropriate time of year. The scope is age appropriate. Reinforcement carries over into the music program in which every grade participates approximately every two weeks.

Additional Judaica:

K,1,2: Introduction to Bible stories (primarily Genesis and Exodus). Stories of major holidays.

Grade 3: Stories from the Torah

Grade 4: Intro. To prophets and writings. Explorations of ideas about God.

Grade 5: Life cycle and development of Jewish thought Grade 6: Israel and Jewish ethics as they relate to students’ lives

Grade 7: The Holocaust and Modern American Jewish history.
