Spanish I

Grades 9-12 This introductory course presents the four basic language skills of understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language. Through this full-immersion course, students will experience opportunities to use all modes of communication and gain an understanding of the perspectives of other cultures. Students will learn through thematic units supplemented by a variety of materials.

Classroom Rules:  Arrive to class on time – if you are late sign the tardy log and quietly take your seat  Be prepared with your class supplies and homework.  Be respectful at all times: respect yourself, your classmates, your teacher, and school property.  Raise your hand in order to speak and remain in your seat unless otherwise given permission. Please do not interrupt the lesson to ask for a pass unless its an emergency  NO food or drinks allowed.

The following is not tolerated in this class:  The use of cell phones or iPods (without teacher permission)  Going to lockers during class time  Food, drinks, body sprays or hand lotions  Laughing at or ridiculing a classmate  Disrespecting the learning environment

Consequences of Misbehavior: The following consequences will occur according to the situation: 1. Warning 2. Parent/Guardian contact 3. After school detention 4. Written referral

Causes for Contact with a Parent/ Guardian  Disrupting class – frequently interrupting another student or me, arriving late, cursing or ridiculing classmates.  Disrespect to teacher and/ or students  Being unprepared for class – homework, pen/ notebook  Excessive bathroom requests or sleeping in class (nurse)  Excessive class absences *** “Cut” test day = NO “make up”

Classroom Guidelines: Students should enter the classroom quietly, get seated in their assigned seats, and get ready to begin work. Students are expected to participate regularly in class by raising a hand and by listening thoughtfully when someone else is speaking. The students must REMAIN IN THEIR SEATS UNTIL THE BELL RINGS. If you need to go to the restroom, do not interrupt the teacher in the middle of a lesson unless it is truly an emergency as it affects the momentum of the entire group.

Class Attendance You are expected to come to class on time everyday that you are in school. We will strictly follow the attendance and lateness policy outlined in the student handbook. You will not be allowed to miss Spanish class to work with another teacher, go to the library, eat lunch, etc… If you have a counseling pass or a pass to be with an administrator, it is your responsibility to hand in any Spanish work that is due that day and get the work that you missed that class period. You also must show Señora Vargas the pass the next class. If you are unable to produce a pass, the absence will be considered a cut. ** It is the student’s responsibility to get all missed notes and class work/ assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to turn in their work and to make up any missed quizzes and/or tests. As per the student handbook it is the students responsibility to ask the teacher what work is owed and have all work complete within a week of your return.

Homework: Homework assignments will be evaluated according to the following guidelines (rubric):

 No late assignments will receive full credit unless there is and EXCUSED ABSENCE or special permission by the teacher. Late homework will receive partial credit only.  Student is responsible for verifying missed assignment(s) and submitting it (them) ASAP and no later than one week to receive full credit. Students are encouraged to check with classmates in case of absence. Grade Distribution:  75% Summative Assessments: Oral/ Written Tests, Projects, and Presentations

 20% Formative Assessments: Classwork/ Participation (class assignments and daily activities) and small quizzes and small projects.

 5% Homework

School Grading Policy: As per school policy, the grading system is as follows 1st Marking Period 22% 3rd Marking Period 22% 2nd Marking Period 22% 4th Marking Period 22% Final Exam 12% Immersion teaching: The teacher will be speaking to the class in Spanish at all times.
