CHRONICLE Greetings To 947 - 4560 Our Members: Well May was a busy month at the SECRETARY Lodge. The Women’s Auxiliary worked hard on their Ellen Weckenbrock events; the Flower Sale, Sounds of the Street Band and providing 298 - 5939 food for the Student of the Year Dinner. And as always, a job well TREASURER done. Once again Don Wirth and his crew did a great Karl Swanson (PER) job with Steak Night. Over 200 people enjoying those special steaks Don buys. Special Chil- dren's Mothers Day Breakfast was well 332 - 9052 attended. Tom and his crew worked up until 12 serving TRUSTEE (5 YEAR) breakfast. Esteemed Lecturing Knight Heather spear headed the Mother’s Day Ritual and had Gerry Vaughan flowers given to the mothers that attended. Great Job by the 372-4523 Officers who took part in the Ritual and to Heather for bringing this ritual back into our Lodge. The fishing TRUSTEE (4 YEAR) contest was held on May 9th and Ellen put that special Lou Gamba, PDD bait she made to have Kenzie catch the biggest fish. It was a fun time for all. The motor cycle committee is logging on miles as they attend events and letting bikers know Bordentown has riders. The vest 638 - 8966 design looks great. YOUTH Our Student of the month program has come to an end for the current school year concluded with our Student of the Year Dinner. During this time all Students of the Month were introduced and the Students of the Year for each school were announced. Additionally, 13 Lodge scholarships were presented. This year the YAC added a new scholarship funded from the YAC program. For this Scholarship, fundraisers will be held to raise the money. We are not interfering with any of our other functions we do. We are naming this scholarship the “William Housell Memorial Scholarship”. Our Fishing contest was held on May 9th. Secretary We will not have a com- mittee meeting in June, since E many of us will be in Wildwood. As with other committees n in the Lodge, we are always looking for new members to t come up with new ideas for fundraising and giving back to e the youth of r our community and this Lodge. We meet on the 1st t Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM and all are a welcome. i n Lou Gamba m e n t T

Something has been bothering me, so I thought I might talk it over with you, be- cause you see, it is about you and me. I remember some time ago people lined up on both sides of the street to watch the parade and, naturally, I was leading every parade, proudly waving in the breeze. When your daddy saw me coming, he immediately removed his hat and placed it against his left shoulder so that his hand was directly over his heart — remember? What happened? I’m still the same old Flag. Oh, I have a few more stars since you were a boy and a lot more blood has been shed since those parades of long ago. But now I don’t feel as proud as I used to. When I come down your street and you just stand there with your hands in your pockets, I may get a small glance and then you look away. Then I see children running around and shouting — they don’t seem to know who I am. I saw a man take his hat off, then look around. He didn’t see anybody else with theirs off, so he quickly put it back on. And what about that night at the ball game, when they played the “Star Spangled Banner” and I waved so proudly in the breeze, but nobody bothered to sing? Oh, they stood up, all right, as sort of a mild patriotic gesture, but then they talked among themselves about the game and weather, but they did not sing. I felt hurt. Is it a sin to be patriotic? Have you forgotten what I stand for and where I have been? Anzio, Guadacanal, Korea, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf. Take a look at the memorial honor rolls sometime — names of those who never came back — who gave their lives to keep this republic free. One nation, under God. When you sa- lute me, you are saluting them. I may not be coming down your street for a long time, as it seems that patriotic parades are a thing of the past. But when I do, will you do me a big favor? Stand up straight, place your right hand over your heart, and if they play the “Star Spangled Banner,” sing out loud and clear. I will salute you by waving back. Show me you remember. I AM YOUR FLAG. Volume 11 Issue11 Page 10
