Session 5: Saintapalooza (Beatitudes & Works of Mercy) October 28, 2013 Queen of Angels Confirmation Preparation 2013-2014

This evening's objectives: - To give candidates experience in recognizing saints by their attributes and deeds, particularly in traditional Christian art - To look at the Beatitudes as a model for holiness and sainthood - To challenge candidates to live the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy

This evening's program: Time 1. Name-tag pick-up; turn in forms 5 minutes 6:45 2. Icebreaker: Scenes from a Cup 5 minutes 6:50 - volunteer actor from each table chooses an action from their cup – shows the paper only to the catechist, who will let the members know when they have guessed correctly - actor must mime the action without speaking or using sound effects, trying to get the other members to guess what it is - if time allows, another volunteer can choose another action from the cup 3. Opening Prayer (sing “Blest Are They” refrain + read Beatitudes, Mt 5) 5 minutes 6:55 4. Beatitudes / Saints and how to “read” them (Rachel) 10 minutes 7:00 5. Breakout Session at Tables 35 minutes 7:10 - each table receives a set of about 10 saint biography cards, in the large envelope. There are 10 so that you have a choice of which to do, and don’t try to read all of them. - candidates take turns reading saints’ bios out loud - connect saint’s actions to Beatitudes using handout, including how the saint went against what society expected - each candidate picks a saint bio to answer questions about individually (the same as the one they read or a different one they like better) - includes recognizing attributes of the saint in their picture(s) from the bio 6. Corporal Works of Mercy Video (Rachel intros) 5 minutes 7:45 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9bKyL_Celw 7. Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy (At Tables) 35 minutes 7:50 - refer to handout with pictures illustrating both types of Works of Mercy - ask candidates to describe each Work in their own words aloud - may refer to textbook pp. 42-43 at catechist’s discretion - each table should brainstorm ways that they personally can enact a few of these Works (blue and pink half-sheets) -- I need these back after class! - go through “Saints of Mercy” worksheet and debate the answers 8. Reminders & Closing Prayer (litany of the saints) 5 minutes 8:25 - candidates & catechists may each take home a prayer card from the small envelope

Homework for Candidates: - begin working on Confirmation Name Essay (due November 25) by starting your research. Use the resources on the back of the Name Essay sheet. For next class, bring in 2 saint names and something about each of those saints that you like or find interesting - read/do pages 39-40 and 42-43 in your textbook. No journaling homework this week. - next class is Monday, November 4
