Week Three Observation Case Study
Option 1: Pedestrian Traffic Case Study
You wish to analyze the pedestrian traffic that passes to and from a given store in a major shopping center. You are interested in determining how many shoppers pass by this store, and you would like to classify these shoppers on various relevant dimensions. Any information you secure should be obtainable from observation alone. Respond to the following questions in a 350- to 1,050-word paper or a 7-10 slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation.
What other information might you find useful to observe? How would you decide what information to collect? Devise the operational definition you would need to determine the number of shoppers. What would you say in your instructions to the observers you plan to use? How might you sample the store traffic? What is the design of this research? Is it a qualitative or quantitative research? Why? Given the research design for this example, why might an alternate research design not work? What other research design(s) might you use?
Option 2: Yahoo!: Consumer Direct Case Study
Read "Yahoo!: Consumer Direct Marries Purchase Metrics to Banner Ads" in Case Index of Business Research Methods. Respond to the following questions in a 350- to 1,050-word paper or a 7-10 slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation.
Describe the research design for Consumer Direct. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the research design. How has the use of panels affected the research design? How have ethical issues influenced the research design? Provide either a qualitative or quantitative research design that might be appropriate for this case. Explain your rationale.
