Sites with free interactive activities
www.atantot.com This site is designed for use on the interactive whiteboard. It has comprehensive topic based presentations for KS2 in French and German with fantastic graphics but few sound files so you need to be confident with basic French vocabulary to use it. 4 recommended activities are: Click on French>KS2>Je me présente>âge for an activity with sound files, with candles to drag to a birthday cake for various ages. Click on 123> 1- 20 écoute for an activity with sound files on numbers Click on ABC > Alphabet 1 for the alphabet with sound files > Chanson for an alphabet song sung to the tune of the Army march www.chez-merlin.com This is a French Maths site. To enter, click on the large red button on the left hand side >‘6 – 7’> ‘Maths’> ‘Numérotation’. Pupils can practise matching written numbers with numerals and putting numbers in sequence. The site gives autofeeback with praise in French but doesn’t say the numbers so you will have to do this to make it a ‘proper’ French activity. The language in the 7-8 section is more advanced, but still useable for language lessons with supervision. In the ages above that, the language gets too complicated for young users. http://www.takatrouver.net/: This is a French government sponsored website. Follow the ‘TakaCréer’ link for sending e-cards (Cybercartes). Follow the links for ‘Taka t’amuser’ (bottom right) > ‘maternelle’ for a selection of games. ‘Je compte 1 à 5’ and ‘j’apprends mes formes’ are the 2 games most suitable for primary language learners as they have sound files.
www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryfrench/ This is a very good site and is very similar to the Pilote CD-ROM in its content and style. It has detailed teacher’s notes and off-line and on-line lesson plans that can be accessed by clicking on the teacher button before entering the 10 – 11 primary French section or by clicking on the open book icon next to each exercise. There are also printable worksheets and a good song section with very simple raps. Children seem to enjoy the video clips of French children with simple dialogue to follow. It is best to view this site using Flash but there is a non-animated HTML version. This site is easily navigated and all the content is suitable for whole class teaching or individual work.
http://www.primaryfrench.net/ This site was created by Connie Hurd, a full time primary French teacher in Lincoln. All the activities and puzzles (made with 'Hot Potatoes' software) are free, interactive, and provide immediate self-correction. Children who complete the exercises successfully are rewarded with a fun animated gif or smilie. New puzzles are coming online as they are created. The site also has some free printable worksheets for teachers. A good selection of photos from France are also online and can be downloaded. www.imagiers.ne t Log on in a variety of languages and find a wide variety of activities such as hangman or picture labelling to play on IWB or in the ICT suite.
Subscription sites with interactive activities
http://www.linguascope.com/ (French, German, Spanish, Italian) The best subscription site by far but also the most expensive at £200+VAT. This gives all staff and pupils access to all 6 lingua sites. Free bits- all previews are fully useable in class The main Linguascope site has a preview section of all the games using the vocabulary ‘In Town’. Linguaprime is the site for young learners, and contains previews of the activities using vocabulary ‘I live’. Linguamate is the interactive games creation site and has 10 free interactive games using ‘pets’ vocabulary. You can create many more in seconds if you subscribe. These sites are good for basic reading activities, word/picture matching, pelmanism, noughts and crosses, wordsearch, hangman, space invaders, and have printable worksheets. www.zut.org.uk This site costs £40 + VAT to use between 9am ad 4pm and is free outside these times. It is designed for secondary pupils but the Year 7 section is very clear and can be used with younger pupils. I have found the Numbers section to be particularly useful. In Les Nombres there is a listening exercise where numbers are missed out and pupils have to identify them and a speed test where pupils have to write the numbers 1 – 10 using the letter tiles provided (this is timed and can become very competitive!). There are sections on all basic topics, Pets is also another good one. In the Pets section, the Qu’est-ce que c’est? games are good for young learners, but do involve having to recognise the written word. As a general rule, any of the exercises with accompanying sound files are usually suitable for younger learners along with the ‘match the pictures’ style exercises. http://www.gridclub.com/ If you are already subscribed to Gridclub, then it’s worth having a look at the games in French and Spanish.
Downloadable materials, teaching ideas and information www.enchantedlearning.com follow the links to French theme page or go direct to: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/themes/french.shtml This site has printable books using basic vocabulary, plus printable labels and activities. All for very young learners and very user friendly.

All perfect for KS2 because all the resources are created by teachers themselves. www.teachingideas.co.uk/foreignlanguages/contents.htm A website with lots of great teaching ideas for primary languages. Well worth a look if you are looking for a new activity. www.momes.net Click on the ‘comptines’ section for hundreds of nursery rhymes and poems about any topic imaginable. This is the site if you want a song for a French assembly about a 3 legged llama! www.readinga-z.com. A site where you can download printable books in French and Spanish. All are levelled for ease of use. You have to subscribe to get the full range but there are many good freebies in the sample section. Not as good as enchantedlearning.com but worth a look. www.paroles.net A site with all the lyrics to French pop songs. www.henrides.net The official site for Henri Des with songs, games etc. You must subscribe for some parts but most of it is free.

Language College sites /secondary sites All these sites have KS2 specific pages. www.ashcombe.surrey.sch.uk This site has a KS1 & 2 section in its general MFL resources section.
