EARTH/SPACE SCIENCE Mrs. Michaeline Neu and Mrs. Jennifer Stonis

COURSE OVERVIEW

This class is designed to provide you with knowledge and information about the Earth and the surrounding universe. You will learn about: *The 5 branches of earth science: astronomy, meteorology, geology, oceanography and environmental science. *How natural processes of the Earth affect us as human beings. *How we have a responsibility for and have an impact on the environment in which we live.

CLASSROOM GUIDELINES

Students are expected to: 1. Be on time to class. 2. Bring necessary materials every day. 3. Participate in class. 4. Be courteous and respectful to others.

MATERIALS FOR CLASS

Each student is required to have a 3-ring binder as their science notebook. You will keep all necessary papers, assignment book and homework due in your notebook.

You must bring the following every day: 1. Your notebook. 2. The textbook we are currently using. 3. Something to write with (pencil and a pen). 4. A highlighter and a whiteboard marker (optional, but would be very helpful to have).

HOMEWORK

1. Homework is due in class, the day that it is due. Homework left elsewhere, i.e. lockers, will be considered late. 2. Any late assignment receives a deduction of points. * Late assignments must be turned in by the end of the chapter (chapter test), or no credit will be given. 3. Assignments are due after an absence the same number of days a student was absent. (2 days absent = 2 days to turn in homework that was due.) GRADES

Each marking period grade will be determined by the points earned during the marking period. A percentage and a grade will be assigned. Cumulative tests will be given periodically during the year; these may include CUBAs or a Mid-Term exam.

At the end of the year, a cumulative final will be given. The exam is worth 16% of the total final grade. The other 84% is the four marking period grades/percentages averaged together.

Example: Marking Period 1 91% Final Exam = 81% 2 90% 3 92% + 4 90% 363 ÷ 4 =91%

Final Grade= (84 * Marking Period Ave ) + (16 * Final Exam) (84*0.91) + (16 * 0.81) = 89.4 Rounding: Only occurs to the nearest whole number (NPSD Policy) 89.4 = 89 B 89.45 = 89 B (will not round) 89.5 = 90 A

North Penn’s Grading Scale: A+ = 97 – 100% A = 90 – 96% B+ = 87 – 89% B = 80 – 86% C+ = 77 – 79% C = 70 – 76% D = 65 – 69% F = 64% and below
