What Key Is It? Bulletin Board

Grade Level: 4-5 Materials  Bulletin board paper (Holcomb’s)  Music themed border (Holcomb’s)  Poster Board (Holcomb’s)  Cardboard (we used a leftover cardboard box)  “Key” shaped notepad (Holcomb’s)  Pre-cut letters (Holcomb’s)  Construction paper (Holcomb’s)  Double-sided tape or glue (Holcomb’s)  Yarn  Pushpins, ruler, black marker

Procedure 1. Put up the bulletin board paper and border. 2. Staple the letters in place to say “What Key Is It?” 3. Make “doors” out of the cardboard to fit the desired size of your bulletin board. If you want another color than brown for your doors, cover them with the construction paper. Poke a hole where a door handle would be, and tie a loop out of yarn for the door handle. On the front of the doors, draw the desired key signatures. Staple doors to the bulletin board. On the inside of the doors, write the corresponding key signature letter name (C, D, F, Bb, ect.). 4. Using the key-shaped notepad, outline the shape onto the poster board. Cut out the poster board keys, and attach a sheet of the notepad to the bulletin board. Trim if necessary. Write the matching key signature names (C, D, F, Bb, ect.) on the keys. Make a hole each key and thread yarn through to make a loop. 5. Put a pushpin next to each door and along the bottom of the bulletin board to hang the keys on. 6. Students match the keys with the letter names to the doors with the key signatures. They can check their own answers by opening the doors to see if the key fits!
