What Life today is different from life 100 years ago. technology has changed our lives?

Before Reading Vocabulary: Introduce the words and have the Phonics/Mechanics: students fill out the vocabulary chart. Discuss different parts of the book: glossary, table of contents, pictures and captions Colonist, crops, depend, farmland, notch, pioneer, settle, wagon train Comprehension Strategy:

Activate/Build Prior Knowledge: Make a list of Features of the informational text chores that have to be done in life: cooking, Compare and Contrast cleaning, transportation, shopping. Discuss how these different things are accomplished through out the day. During Reading

Using appropriate Guided reading strategies, students will be reading at their own pace and teachers will be listening to students read, monitoring, giving feedback, taking anecdotal notes and running records.

Suggested Pacing Day 1- Do all of the Before Reading activities, have the students read the story and then answer the questions in the after reading section. Day 2- Review reading with some of the after reading text. Have students re-read the story and complete the Now/Then chart.

Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: After Reading Use these questions to guide a discussion about what the students have learned about pioneers:

Pg. 5 What is the difference between a colonist and a pioneer? Are all colonists pioneers? Are all pioneers colonists? Pg. 7 Why do you think the pioneers traveled in wagon trains? Pg. 9 Do the picture and the caption correspond with each other? If you had only had the picture would you have known all the same information? Pg. 11 What is different in the log cabin from your house? How are the log cabin and your house the same? Pg. 13 What different jobs are shown in the picture for this section?

Use the Then/Now chart to discuss how the jobs we need to do in life have changed from pioneer times to now. Have the children fill them out and then re-read the story independently. Discuss whether or not the glossary, pictures and captions assisted the student’s comprehension of the story. What did you understand better because of the glossary, pictures or captions?

Check vocabulary sheets for understanding. Use Lincoln Logs as a visual to show the notches Listen to student’s responses to questions before or that the pioneers use to build their homes. Allow after reading. students to design and build a Lincoln logs home. Check students understanding of the different parts of a book. See if students can contrast how things were done in the past to how they are done now using the Then/Now chart. *Not all activities will be done in each lesson. Some lessons may take multiple days to complete. However, all students should be reading each time you meet.
