For Many People, Unit Rates Are Used Daily

Real-World Math

For many people, unit rates or proportions are used daily. Rates and proportions allow us to make good or cost effective decisions when we shop at the grocery store, drive our cars, or choose which gas station to fill up.

Your assignment is to design a real-life application of unit rates and proportions. After completing both you will then present the problem through a multi-media presentation.

We will start by thinking of a way YOU use unit rates. If you aren’t sure, ask an adult how they use them. Please make sure your scenario and the numbers you use are appropriately challenging.

You will need to do the following:  Pick a theme that you can design a unit rate and a proportion problem.  Think of a scenario using unit rates and your theme o Present a word problem or problems. o Make sure you ask a question. o The problems should be multi-step and appropriately challenging for honors pre-alg  Briefly explain the details of your problem. o What information is important? o To solve the problem do we need other information? o Explain how would you solve the problem. Show your work neatly o Your explanation should show your understanding of unit rates in the context of your problem/s.  Submit your unit rate rough draft  Think of a scenario using proportions (and you can use unit rates also) and your theme o Present a word problem or problems. o Make sure you ask a question. o The problems should be multi-step and appropriately challenging for honors pre-alg  Briefly explain the details of your problem. o What information is important? o To solve the problem do we need other information? o Explain how would you solve the problem. Show your work neatly o Your explanation should show your understanding of unit rates in the context of your problem/s.  Submit your proportion rough draft  Review both problems. The problem you present must include unit rates and proportions. That might mean you need to present both problems.  Choose the most interesting way you can to present your problem/solutions. You may choose: o Multimedia (e.x.- Video, ShowMe, Prezi, PowerPoint, etc.). For instance, all of the prior mentioned technologies allow you to talk through the problem (even in PowerPoint you can add your voice). A video would allow you to act out a scenario then you could present your solution through the video or it can be written. Ultimately, you want to engage the audience when you present and/or solve your problem (max grade: 10/10) o Poster (Unlined computer paper is fine) (max grade: 9/10). Must include graphics. o Other: must be approved by me
