COURSE DESCRIPTION

Literary Explorations is a literature course designed to introduce major literary themes, techniques and terminology, thereby enlarging and refining student responses to literature. The semester is constructed to give the students a fundamental knowledge of universal themes, writer’s craft, literary analysis and terminology in order to provide a foundation for future courses, as well as to increase student appreciation of his/her reading. This is required English class for graduation.

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS

The following materials are suggested for success in class each day: 1. Section in three-ring binder with loose leaf paper.  Information handouts are to be kept in binders available for each class. 2. Blue or black ink pens and several pencils; red pen & highlighter. 3. Planner (provided by Mountain View High School) Textbooks will be issued to each student to be kept at home.

GRADING POLICY

All work is assigned a point value. At the end of the grading period, the total points earned are translated into a percentage and the grade is assigned according to the following scale:

90% - 100% = A (Excellent) 80% - 89% = B (Above Average) 70% - 79% = C (Average) 60% - 69% = D (Below Average) Below 60% = F (Failing) Writing assignments (Essays and Outlines) are worth 35% of overall grade; Test and Quizzes are worth 20% of overall grade, and all assignments are worth 15% of overall grade. All other student work and expectations are 10% of overall grade.

Students & Parents can view grades online at: www.mpsaz.org/mymps Make up work: If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to get makeup work for all days that are missed. Absences do not excuse students from any assignment. Students will have one day for each day missed to complete missing work. Students are given one week to complete missed quizzes and tests.

ATTENDANCE Students are expected to be present in class every day; any absence could affect overall grade. Absences do not excuse students from obtaining class information / assignments. It is student’s responsibility to obtain information and handouts from missed class.

TARDIES: Students will be marked as tardy if they are not in the class productively working on class warm up when the bell rings. Three tardies will result in a 15 min. lunch detention; failure to comply will result in parent notification. Students that are more than 10 min. late will be marked as absent, per Mountain View attendance policies.

EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to uphold all of Mountain View High School’s policies of behavior. Mrs. Orr will adhere to all school policies and expect students to maintain a high level of discipline, respect and academics within the classroom. This includes discipline for dress code violations, disregard of electronic devices policies.
