Lab Safety Rules

1. The most important rule is A-B-C – always be careful. Most accidents are the result of carelessness. 2. Report all accidents to the instructor. 3. Never lean on, sit on, or tamper with any machine. 4. Use machines or tools only after you have learned safety precautions and be sure to use the correct method of operation. When in doubt, ask the teacher. 5. Walk at all times and do not engage in horseplay. 6. Do not make any unnecessary loud noises to avoid distracting the attention of those working at machines. 7. Do not throw tools, materials, or other objects in the shop. 8. Keep your mind on your work and do not talk to others while running any power equipment. 9. Students must report to the instructor at once any and all hazardous conditions or safety violations in the shop. 10. Pick up scraps from the floor so that no one will slip or trip. 11. Do not hit hardened steel such as files, drills, or hammers together. Hard steel is brittle and chips may fly. 12. Always cut away from yourself AND others. 13. Long hair must be tied back. 14. Do not wear loose clothing while working on a machine. 15. Do not use dull or defective tools as they may cause injuries due to slipping or breaking as effort is increased. 16. Always turn machines off when you are done using them. Do not adjust, reach in, or leave the equipment until it comes to a complete stop. 17. Only one student is permitted to work on and operate a machine at a time. 18. Use tools only for the purpose they were designed for. 19. Be careful when moving heavy or long objects. 20. Before using any machines, make sure safety guards are in place. 21. Be sure work or cutting tools are always firmly held in place. 22. Carry tools properly while walking around the lab. 23. Remember where the emergency shut off buttons are. Never turn off unless there is an emergency. 24. No open toed shoes are to be worn while in the lab. 25. SAFETY GLASSES WILL BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WITHOUT EXCEPTION!!!!!!!!!
