UPDATING ‘A SAFE CHURCH’ – what changes do you need to make? Janet Irwin, Parish Safeguarding Officer from St Nicholas Church, Tooting, has identified changes which need to be implemented and taken them to her PCC for her approval. Jill has revised it slightly - you may find this checklist helpful in both making necessary changes in your church and informing your PCC and those who need to know. In particular, your attention is drawn to numbers 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8 below.

MISSING PEOPLE It is estimated that four out of every five adults who go missing are experiencing a mental health problem at the time they disappear. Many turn for support to professionals from the homeless sector and those providing mental health services, as well as other people and groups in the community, including churches. The organisation Missing People (www.missingpeople.org.uk) has worked with the Department of Health to develop an information sharing protocol, to allow for the safe exchange of information about vulnerable missing adults between the charity and partner organisations from both the statutory and voluntary sectors. Whilst upholding an individuals’ right to go missing, the scheme gives professionals and community members specific information about the people they may come into contact with, and clear options for giving missing vulnerable adults the support they may require. Following a recent meeting to explore how churches can be involved, Barry Goodwin, Diocesan Officer for Public Policy and Parish Development, will be in touch with organisations in Croydon Borough to explore partnership with Missing People. In June 2010 you were advised to destroy any of the old white CRB application forms and use the new Purple form which can be obtained as usual from Linda Craven, CRB Administrator at Trinity House. Guidelines for completing the new form were sent out in June 2010. Some forms are being submitted with errors, which slows down the process. So these are some to watch out for:

 Mandatory sections – please make sure that the mandatory boxes in yellow are completed even if the question has a yes or no box  Proofs of ID – if the applicant has a driving licence please ensure the full 18 part driving licence is completed in the boxes provided. A driving licence starts with the first 5 initials of their surname and the issue number at the end of the licence is part of the full driving licence details  “Registered body use only” boxes on the two middle pages – these are the responsibility of the Parish Safeguarding Officer (or the person who sees the proofs of identification). Please place a cross in the boxes provided to confirm the following:- o a1- a3 refers to confirmation of full name o a14 – confirms date of birth o a21 – confirms national insurance number o a23 – driving licence o a25 – passport o section b - current address verified

 Section W, X, Y and Z – once you have checked the form has been completed correctly and have verified the applicant’s proofs of identification you print your name (omitting title) in the box at section W

 Answer questions 59 – 62 – the position applied for is the role the person has in the church with children (eg Junior church leader, crèche assistant). The organisation name is the name of the church – not just ‘St Mary’s Church’ but where St Mary’s is (eg ‘St Mary’s Church, Peckham’)

 Question 67 – “application for a new post holder” means someone who has not applied for a disclosure before in your church and “application is for an existing post holder who is being re-checked” refers to someone who is applying for a disclosure as a renewal (after 5 years). Do not place a cross in the second question

 SECTIONS Y and Z should be LEFT BLANK in all circumstances.
