1.Creating Grade Categories in Moodle

Categories are groups of grade items. You create categories to organize items in your gradebook. Categories are especially important if you have a large number of assignments or if you have associated outcomes with your assignments. Without categories, your gradebook may feel jumbled and be difficult to manage. With categories, you can group grade items together and collapse them when you don’t need to see the grade items in that category.

Use the following procedure to add grade categories to your gradebook and move items into a category.

Do one of the following:  For categories that are assigned point values like quizzes, go to step For categories that are assigned point values like quizzes, select Value as the Grade Type. Moodle can then aggregate the individual assignments’ scores and display a category total..  For categories that use a scale (like the Alverno S, U, IP scale), go to step For categories that use a scale (like the Alverno S, U, IP scale), select None for Grade type..

10. For categories that use a scale (like the Alverno S, U, IP scale), select None for Grade type.

This prevents Moodle from trying to add and incorrectly average scores for the category. There will be no category total if Grade type is set to None.

12. Click the Save changes button.

13. To move assignments to a category, check the check box to the right of the assignments to be moved.

14. Select the new category from the “Move selected items to:” drop-down box.

The assignments you checked are moved into the category you selected.
