Miles Snowden, MD, MPH, CEBS Chief Medical Officer, Optum

Miles Snowden is a strategic advisor and innovator for providers and payers seeking successful development and participation in new business models, including those sharing risk and reward with delivery systems. In this work, he leverages his deep experience in improving patient outcomes, the health of communities and the financial performance of payers and providers. Core to this focus is his belief that all of these health care stakeholders can be similarly benefited through thoughtful innovation and consultation.

As the senior physician executive for Optum, the health services division of UnitedHealth Group, Snowden provides clinical oversight of the company’s development and distribution of health care technology, services and consulting designed to assist Optum’s provider and payer clients in making informed health care decisions, preventing illness, gaining operational efficiency and maximizing financial performance. Optum serves more than 250,000 providers, more than 350 payers and nearly 60 million health care consumers.

Snowden is also a member of the executive clinical leadership team of UnitedHealth Group. In this role, he represents the enterprise in industry venues, as well as with leaders of organized medicine, clients, regulators, legislators and investors. Snowden has served in various leadership roles within UnitedHealth Group. Prior to his current role, he worked at UnitedHealthcare, where he led national clinical product development, delivery and consulting for the commercial business. Concurrently he led UnitedHealthcare’s southeast region client management organization.

Prior to his work at UnitedHealth Group, Snowden was the chief medical officer at Delta Air Lines, where he managed global health care benefits for more than 180,000 individuals. Earlier in his career, he founded an occupational health consulting practice in Louisville, Ky., and served as its medical director.

His undergraduate and medical degrees were obtained at the University of Louisville, and he completed his medical residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and also the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
