Unit 1 Project: Animal Adaptations.
We have learned that organisms have special characteristics that help them survive called adaptations. For example, a bird might have an adaptation for eating sunflower seeds and ants. If the ant population dies out, the bird can still eat seeds in order to live.
In this activity, you will design a make-believe organism with special adaptations. Then you will describe how these adaptations will help the organism live.
1. Study the chart on the back page. Choose one adaptation from each column. For example an organism might be a scavenger that burrows underground and has spikes on its tail.
Diet:______
Type of Transportation:______
Special Adaptation:______
2. You will now design an organism that has the three adaptations you chose. You may make a poster or a 3-D example of your organism. Make sure you include a description (or a caption if you make a poster) of your organism’s name, tell what it looks like, what ecosystem it lives in, and how its adaptations help it survive.
3. All students will also write a paragraph and possibly give (time-permitting) an oral presentation that includes the following:
- The organism’s name
- The three adaptations it has.
- In what ecosystem would your organism most likely survive- the desert, rain forest, plains, ice-caps, mountain, ocean, etc. EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWER
- What organisms does you imaginary organism eat? - What kind of organism is your organism (mammal, insect, reptile, bird, amphibian, fish)?
- What modern or ancient organism is you organism most like? Explain the similarities between the two organisms.
** Neatness and effort will be assessed on this assignment. I should be able to tell you spent more than 1 day on this project
** For the written paragraph, you should use correct writing conventions (punctuation, grammar, and spelling)
