Purpose This unit standard is for people working in the carpet manufacturing industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of spool axminster loom operation; prepare to operate a spool axminster loom; operate a loom and monitor the weaving process; and keep the loom and work area clean.

Prepare to operate a spool axminster loom.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Loom is prepared in accordance with workplace safety procedures.

2.2 Beams are loaded and warp yarns are threaded according to workplace practice.

2.3 Spools are loaded according to workplace practice.

Range loaded in sequence according to pattern, chains tensioned, spools tensioned.

2.4 Weft yarn is loaded in accordance with work instruction.

2.5 Inspection piece meets product standard.

Outcome 3

Operate a loom and monitor the weaving process.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Loom is operated according to workplace practice, and in accordance with workplace safety procedures.

3.2 Weaving faults are identified, and action is taken according to workplace procedure.

Range weaving faults identified in workplace inspection procedure.

3.3 Warp and weft yarn faults are identified, and action is taken according to workplace procedure.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Work area is kept clean, and all waste material is collected and sorted according to type to prevent contamination.

4.2 Loom components are kept free of unwanted fibre during processing according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures.

4.3 Loom is cleaned at end of a job according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures.
