Social Studies Movie Night (Historically Relevant Movies for the Regents Curriculum)

“Kingdom of Heaven” is a 2005 movie that deals with the subject of the crusades. It is a fictional story portraying Balian of Ibelin who travels to Jerusalem during the crusades of the 12th century. There he finds himself as the defender of the city and its people. The movie covers the centuries old conflict between the people of this region, the hardships of the crusades and the intent of the crusades. It received an R-Rating for violence, since there are a number of battle scenes (the director Ridley Scott is known for his graphic action movies). The movie is 1 hour 45 minutes long so the students may bring snacks, beverages and lawn chairs to make the viewing more comfortable. There will be a no tolerance policy for cell phone use, sleeping and/or talking. Students will be asked to leave if they do not quietly watch the movie.

This is an entirely optional opportunity for students to view this historical movie in its entirety and receive extra credit. A teacher will be present to explain and answer questions pertaining to the movie. Materials relevant to the movie may be distributed and discussed.

If students would like to watch the movie on their own, they may also receive credit. They will need to complete the questions on the back of this sheet and answer one verbal question from the teacher to prove they did indeed watch the movie. If they fail to answer this very obvious question correctly they will not receive credit.

Due to the R-Rating of the movie “Kingdom of Heaven”, parent Permission is required. No student will be allowed to view the movie without parent permission!
