POSC 280 Model United Nations Application & Information 2018 Spring

You are invited to apply for a spot in the Model United Nations (POSC 280) class. Student delegates selected for this class will spend semester preparing to represent the Marist Team at the 2018 National Model United Nations (NMUN) Conference. The NMUN, a five-day simulation of the United Nations through its committees and councils will occur from March 25-29, 2018, in New York City. The NMUN brings together over 5,000 college students from throughout the United States and over 40 other countries. The MUN course--that prepares student delegates for the NMUN--will meet on Monday nights from 6:30-9:00pm. We anticipate that there will be a fee associated with the conference attendance (it will be determined at a later date). History of the National Model UN

MARCH 25-29, 2018

The National Model United Nations (NMUN) is the oldest simulation of the United Nations conducted on an annual basis in the United States. It is the successor to the Model League of Nations. The NMUN is the largest college student conference in the United States. In 2018, over 5,000 college students from over 160 colleges and universities throughout the United States and over 40 other countries will participate in either Conference A or Conference B of the 5-day simulation in New York City. Some sessions will be held at the UN while others will be held at the hotel that serves as the conference headquarters.

The NMUN has a model General Assembly, ECOSOC, Security Council, specialized UN agencies, and regional organizations. Each delegate is expected to faithfully represent his/her country in the assigned Model UN committee or council. Issues include human rights, trade, disarmament, refugees, drugs, and the environment.

Delegations come from all over the nation (University of California, Georgetown, Wright State, Austin College, Howard University, Sarah Lawrence College, University of Wisconsin, etc.). There are also delegations from colleges and universities in Canada, China, Japan, Egypt, Africa, Latin America, and Europe.

Marist College will send about 15 delegates to represent the nation assigned at the 2018 NMUN. Student preparation involves extensive research on the nation’s history and foreign policy, writing position papers on the topics assigned to each committee and council where the nation is represented, and developing resolutions that will be introduced by the nation during the simulation. Students meet in class for 3 hours each week prior to the late March simulation and are expected to do substantial additional research outside of class.
