Course: This is a rigorous College Algebra Course, covering functions, inverses and graphs; polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions; systems of equations and matrices; applications; arithmetic and geometric sequences and series. The mathematical and critical thinking skills you obtain in this course will be essential in other math classes and to your future, especially if you choose to pursue a career in science. To help you learn and retain this valuable information, there will be a heavy emphasis on class participation. So come to class awake and bring questions, ideas, and most importantly your enthusiasm!

Grading: Khan Academy Pre-Algebra Assignment 5% WeBWork 20% Tests 45% Final 30% Class participation up to 3% extra credit! Khan Academy Work up to 5% extra credit!

WeBWork: You will have a WeBWork assignment due every Tuesday at midnight. The assignments will be long, so make sure you start working on them early! You are welcome to work together on these assignments, get help from me, or ask for help at the tutoring center. However, keep in mind that you are responsible for knowing how to do all the problems on your own, as very similar problems will appear on tests and the final. WeBWork is a valuable tool in testing your understanding of the material, since you get instant feedback, and the assignments are a significant part of your grade, so make sure you are putting in a lot of effort. You are expected to get 100% on WeBWork for the semester. If you are unfamiliar with WeBWork, talk to me or your classmates to make sure you understand how it works. If you do not have access to a computer, there is a computer lab in the basement of LCB by the Tutoring Center. Instructions are available on http://www.math.utah.edu/~leibman/1050/webwork.html Here is a useful WeBWork help page: http://www.math.utah.edu/online/ww/help/ Tests: We will have three one-hour in class tests during the semester and a two-hour final exam at the end. All exams will rely heavily on class lectures, the text, and WeBWork. Make up exams will only be given in extenuating circumstances with documentation of a serious illness or a family crisis. If you know in advance that you will have to miss an exam for a legitimate reason, inform me by email as soon as possible.

Khan Academy: The instructions for Khan Academy are at http://www.math.utah.edu/~leibman/khan.html There will be one mandatory Khan Academy Pre-Algebra assignment due on Thursday, September 5th. It is worth 5% of your overall grade. The Algebra assignments are excellent practice and are due December 19th. They will add up to 5% extra credit to your grade. This can mean a difference of a letter grade!

Calculators: Calculators are not required for this course, are not needed for homework, and will not be allowed for exams.

Other Resources: Mathematics Tutoring Center: Drop in, sit down, and if you have a question, someone will come by who can help you.
