Summary details Unit name: MRC Clinical Sciences Centre Division/Section: Integrative Biology Job title Group Leader and Section Chair *Salary range: £76K - £100K *Band (Grade): 1 *Contract type (e.g. Open/Fixed term): Open ended *Hours (e.g. full or part time): Full time Detailed job description The Integrative Biology Section combines experimental and computational approaches to address fundamental biological questions at different levels of complexity. Focus areas include the study of genome regulatory architecture, quantitative analysis of gene expression, genotype-phenotype studies and state-of-the-art imaging from single molecules to human patients.

The successful applicant will be influential in shaping the section's overall research strategy as well as the development of individual research programmes and the mentoring of junior section members.

There is no mandatory teaching requirement

Person requirements Education / Qualifications / Training required: Essential:

PhD or equivalent; several years post-doctoral experience in a relevant area would normally be required

MRC Job description and person specification template v1.0 Page 2 of 4 Previous work experience required: Essential: A strong international profile An outstanding track record of independent research in an area of integrative, computational or systems biology that is synergistic with one or more of the Institute's core strengths, which include epigenetics, gene regulation, metabolism and imaging.

Desirable: Active research profile including invitations to speak at international meetings and experience as peer reviewer of manuscripts for academic journals.

Knowledge and experience: Essential:

In depth knowledge of the chosen field of research and an understanding of its relevance to the CSC

Excellent technical skills relevant to the research programme

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Experience in management of financial resources

Ability to organise and prioritise workload, to delegate responsibility as appropriate and to supervise staff

Ability to provide leadership, to work within a team and manage, motivate, inspire and support staff

 Identifying, obtaining and managing resources and funding from non-MRC sources

 Determining the strategy for dissemination of the research output from the Group by publication of results, presentation at scientific meetings and responding to media enquiries

 Appreciation of research governance and its implications for this post

 Contributing to the MRC’s commitment in the areas of training, enhancing public awareness of scientific issues, interaction with academic and health service providers and commercial exploitation where appropriate

 Contributing to scientific progress in the field as a whole by, for example, membership of expert committees, editing specialist journals, refereeing funding applications.

Desirable:

Proven experience in training and supervision of PhD students.

Proven ability to obtain external grant income
