CALL TO WORSHIP

We gather in this sacred space to worship God whose teaching is perfect; whose directions are sure. We gather in this holy place to worship God whose standards are right; whose commandments are clear; We come to be given life, and made wise, to have our hearts stirred and our eyes opened wide. Let the words of our mouths and the whispering of our hearts be in harmony with God’s will.

*HYMN NO. 132 “Come, Great God of All the Ages” ABBOT’S LEIGH

Verses 1-3

CALL TO CONFESSION Jesus gave sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf. But too often we choose neither to see nor hear God’s word.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord, we confess, we turn to you to get the inside track and to obtain special favors. We ask for your direction in our lives only when it coincides with the direction we have decided to go. We want your power only when it will benefit our personal projects. 1502 West 13th Street ♦ Wilmington, DE 19806 ♦ 302-654-5214 ♦ www.wpc.org We ask you to sanction our selfish ambitions. We want you to hand us a blank check that we can fill out however we wish. Help us to listen for what is your purpose for our lives. Help us to be willing to being used by you rather than trying to use you. In Christ’s name we pray. At the asterisk (*), please stand as you are able.

ASSURANCE OF GOD’S FORGIVENESS

TIME WITH OUR CHILDREN Anne Ledbetter

ANTHEM Psalm III T. Charles Lee Westminster Choir

Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! Many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help, no help for you, no help in God. But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people that have set themselves against me round about. Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God. Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: thy blessing is upon thy people.

TELLING OF THE SCRIPTURE STORY Matthew 7:7-11 New Testament, page 6

SERMON “Ask and It Will Be Given” Greg Jones

*HYMN NO. 333 “Seek Ye First” LAFFERTY

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We believe in one true and living God. We acknowledge one God alone, whose demands on us are absolute, whose help for us is sufficient. That One is the Lord, whom we worship, serve, and love. God is greater than our understanding. We do not fully comprehend who God is or how God works. God’s reality far exceeds all our words can say. The Lord’s requirements are not always what we think is best. The Lord’s care for us is not always what we want. God takes the initiative and is able to do far more than we ask or think. A Declaration of Faith OFFERING During the offering, please sign your name and pass the red folders down each row. As folders are returned to the center aisle, note the names of fellow worshippers on your pew.

OFFERTORY Prayer David W. Guion Justin Gonzalez, tenor

Not blindly, not in hatred, Lord, let me do my part; Keep open, oh, keep open, dear Lord, My eyes, my mind, my heart! Hear Thou my pleading, Hear Thou my prayer!

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn No. 591)

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all people here below; Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen
