1. Lesson Planning
When lesson planning it is possible to start with the topic; that is to decide first which topic you want to work on with the children, then list the language points it suggests and look for activities which introduce and practise this language and which develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Example:
General topic: Food
Related topics: Shopping/buying food, eating in restaurants/cafes, recipes and cooking, a healthy diet, food in different countries, food and festivals Language: Food vocabulary; I like/don’t like …, I’d like …, Can I have …?, Have you got …?, Is/are there …? You should/shouldn’t …, We/they eat … Chosen topic & Buying food, cooking. (10-12 year olds) age range: Activities: Introduce food vocabulary using flashcards. Get children to make a vocabulary network. The children bring in food labels to make a poster. Use the labels to practise Can I have …? and I’d like some/a … Do a ‘Find the differences’ activity with a food cupboard/fridge to practice Is/are there …? Do a shopping role play using empty food packets. The children write recipes and make a class recipe book. The children do a restaurant role play. Do a questionnaire about health.
Now do the same for Cities
