ESSAY REFLECTION "The best writing is rewriting." E.B. White REWRITE GUIDELINES 1. Re-read your essay, as if someone else wrote it. Pay careful attention to any teacher comments. 2. Fill out the chart below and on the back, and refer to several specific elements of your essay. Be very specific. Save the paragraph and the “how your fixed your weakness” until after you have rewritten your essay. See #5 for instructions on how to write the paragraph.

3. Now, it’s time to rewrite your essay. Please read my comments, and use those comments to rewrite your essay. I will be looking to see that you followed my suggestions.

4. Highlight the parts of your essay that are substantially changed or new. 5. Write a paragraph explaining what you have learned about your writing from having to rewrite this piece. Based on what you’ve learned, what will you work on in future pieces of writing in general? Be very specific. For example, what grammar errors were common in this piece? What do you notice about your sentence structure, your paragraph structure, your supporting details, your interpretations, etc.? How will you avoid making the same errors in your writing? Again, be very specific.

6. Ask your parents to sign the first page of your essay with teacher comments. Papers without parent signatures will be penalized 3 points.

7. Attach your rewrite reflection and your rewritten essay to the draft I corrected. Your essay reflection form should be on top. Your rewrite packet will include the following papers in the order listed: essay reflection sheet on top, fresh, rewritten essay, essay with teacher comments and a parent’s signature, rough draft, outline, dialectical journal.

8. I will give your rewrite an overall +, Ö, or – grade. Maximum points possible = 20 points. This grade is based on the quality of your strength/weakness chart (below) and the quality of your rewritten essay. These points are homework points – a separate grade from your essay grade. Your original essay grade does not change
