A. PRIMARY ROLE The Principal Business Analyst is responsible for collaborating, leading, and ensuring the successful delivery of critical components of [reporting center], serving the faculty, staff, and students at all campuses of Indiana University. Many of these systems require continuous operation/high availability and 24 X 7 support. The principal business analyst will lead large/complex design, analysis, testing, production support, system analysis, consulting, and upgrade project work. [This individual will be part of the delivery team serving as the Product Manager or Product Owner role within the agile framework. (Optional)]

Position will provide functional expertise for team, including supporting mission-critical university processes on all campuses. Contribute to the growth and modification of the systems by acquiring and maintaining knowledge of new and emerging applications, tools, and architecture that may be used to support the business operations. Lead the enhancement of mission-critical applications by interpreting client needs and applying these decisions to the design, analysis and testing of application functionality and their user interfaces. Individual develops and implements testing plans, designs modifications, and insures compliance with federal and university policies.

Effective leadership skills are essential for this position. The principal business analyst will have to establish collegial relationships counterparts in the other module areas, balancing advocacy with the need to cooperate in the management of an extremely complex interrelated system. In addition, the position will have a highly visible role to communicate and consult with stakeholders in campus functional units and negotiate, mediate and resolve issues critical to the academic mission of the University.

B. PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

60% Ultimately responsible for the representation of institutional business requirements to the project teams. Responsible for consulting with various IU groups and communities within the institution to bring those perspectives forward to the project. Define business requirement in complex multi- campus environment. Provide comprehensive and deep subject matter expertise for critical student area business processes. Direct the preparation of business solution proposals, including specifications, milestones, resource needs, and timelines. Collaborate with customers on the resolution of business process issues including those that cross organizational boundaries. Maintain a broad understanding of the overall business processes in the functional offices as well as a broad understanding of Indiana University’s academic and administrative policies and practices. Establish module area standards and participate in formulating policy with respect to university business processes and supporting technologies. Direct business analyst with the development of written requirements representing the needs of the users at IU. Understand the targeted users of the system and their specific needs and workflows through modeling and descriptive requirements. Facilitate and lead interviews, focus groups, and workshops to establish current and future business requirements. Assist with user experience research and the development of interactive prototypes. Work closely with various project teams to translate business requirements into Technical Specifications for development.

30% Serve as a key planning resource for the functional or product area. Facilitates project discussions to reach consensus on direction, product scope, or common understanding of complex issues. Works closely with the functional stakeholders (academic and business owners) to ensure decision makers are updated on project progress and made aware of project issues that may need resolution. Provides recommendations on project scoping, planning, prioritization, resource allocation, and schedule assignments for institutional representatives. Serves as a member of the Product Council. Assist development teams in the enforcement of project deadlines and schedules. Works to identify areas of improvement throughout the development process. Facilitate business process reengineering sessions as needed. Validates IU functional/business requirements.

5% Develops communications plans and business awareness to assist in the deployment of IU technology solutions. Communicates project status and progress to the user community.

5% Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

C. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree in analytic or computer-related field. Combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Minimum experience: Five (5) more years of experience working in business analysis working on complex problems and producing concrete, actionable solutions. [Agile team experience preferred. (Optional)]

Required knowledge, skills and abilities: Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required. Problem solving skills are required. Customer service attitude and willingness to work in a team-oriented environment is required.

Demonstrated knowledge of unit and/or Central office business and administrative processes or relevant higher education experience. Demonstrated technical, analytical and independent problem- solving ability is required in conjunction with effective leadership.

Effective time management skills with an ability to deliver consistently high quality work even in the face of changing priorities. Ability to abstract institutionally focused business problems in order to support the development of new and more efficient solutions needed to support the vision of a next generation student system. Strong analytical skills, able to take business requirements and abstract them into models and concepts.

Equipment utilized: Computer, software and office equipment related to this position. D. LEVEL OF DECISION MAKING Position requires the individual to be a “go to” person for problems and solutions related to systems and their integration in support of critical operations, as well as business process variations among the campuses and academic programs. Position assumes knowledge and compliance with federal, state and university regulations, and functional expertise to make decisions that impact operations and utilization of key tools. This position functions as the business and systems expert for Indiana University and must be able to work with a variety of campus and university clients and end users to evaluate complex problems and determine solutions consistent with other priorities and applications. Individual must be able to independently respond to time-sensitive questions from internal and external constituents particularly during critical business cycles. Position requires an individual who is self-motivated and willing to be responsible for tasks, processes and functions assigned.

E. SCOPE AND IMPACT This employee’s efforts will impact Indiana University (system wide). Supporting software used by students, faculty, and/or staff on all IU campuses. The stability, accuracy, and performance of the software are imperative.
