Longhorn Men Win 10th NCAA Team title Congratulations to the Men’s team on their come from behind, total team effort, win at the NCAA meet at Ohio State. The chant was #10 in 2010! The meet was delayed by a day, when 3 of the top 5 teams came down with a virus (including Eddie and 6 Longhorns). Once the meet began the horns battled into the lead with strong diving and a win by in the 200 IM. The second day saw Cal surge ahead and our tradition of great 800 free relays continue a win streak. The last day; the horns dominated with depth and diving to finish with an even 500 points and a ceremonial in the pool “Eyes of Texas”. See a full review, great articles and pictures of the outstanding season at: http://www.texassports.com/sports/m-swim/tex-m- swim-body.html Carol and I enjoyed the trip to Columbus. We have always known Texas has the best coaches, parents and fans in the land and now we have the best team. We enjoyed seeing former Horns Dave McClellan, Andy Hansen, Mike Brown and Philip Nenon cheering on the team. Sam Kendricks (’83) did a great job announcing the meet as always and ESPN commentator even flashed a Hook’em to former teammate when the last relay had been swum. Congrats on a great season.

UT Women 2nd at Big XII and 11th at NCAA Meet

The Women’s team came up just short of defending their Big X11 title. The NCAA meet was also a bit disappointing as the horns finished 11th. Texas finished the NCAA Championships in 11th place with 106.5 points. Florida captured the NCAA team title with 382 points, and Stanford placed second with 379.5 points. California placed third with 363 points, and Arizona took fourth with 359.5 points. Georgia rounded out the top-five with 342.5 points.

Kathleen Hersey secured her fifth career individual All-America honor with her fourth- place mark of 1:53.65 in the 200 butterfly championship final. Hersey nailed down an All- America finish in Thursday's 200 individual medley finals and an honorable mention All- America finish in Friday's 100 butterfly consolation final. With a great recruiting class and hard work Coach Kim Brakin, Jim Henry and Matt Scoggin plan on a much better finish next season.

Texas Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame News:

1948 – 400M RELAY JILL STERKEL with son BRANDON LAURA Eric Finical, William Paulus, Frank Campbell, Wally Pryor, WILKINSON Scott Spann & Kris Kirchner Bob Cone and Marc Yancy

We had a wonderful induction in Ft. Worth in April. The ceremony had a burnt orange flair amongst all the purple of the TCU Alumni Center. Four out of the five inductees were Longhorns. Coach Pat Patterson gave an inspiring and often hilarious keynote address to the appreciative audience. Nick Nevid (’83) and I were fortunate to introduce William Paulus. Jennifer Barron Blanchard (’83) enthusiastically presented Jill Sterkel while Dotson Smith told stories from Wally Pryor’s many years devoted to aquatics. Laura Wilkinson’s acceptance speech included “why it is so great to be a Texas Longhorn” and a big thanks to all those that make UT a great combined swimming and diving team. She boasted large praises for fellow recipient and former head UT Coach Sterkel for always supporting the divers.

Don’t miss the formal induction of these five great Texas Legends at the Texas Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame Meet at UT December 4-6. Come see our Longhorn swimming and diving teams compete against some of the best teams in the country. There will be a reception at the TSDHOF museum on the 2nd floor of the swim center and then the presentation on deck just before finals at 6 PM. There is no cost to attend the meet or presentation.

The TSDHOF is a non-profit organization and very much needs your support to exist. Check out their website: www.tsdhof.org You may make a contribution to honor an inductee or simply send us a donation to help us stay afloat. Donations may be sent to 45 Lake Forest Circle, Conroe, TX 77384

$$ WETS Dews are due $$ Thanks for keeping Texas Swimming and Diving afloat. Please use the 2010 Dews envelope to mail in your contribution and/or banquet money. if you misplaced or did not recieve the envelope send to your treasurer: Marvin Rich (we hope so) PO BOX 6962, HOUSTON, TX 77265. Please do not send more than $100.00 as big donations are still needed to help UT swimming by donating to the Longhorn Foundation. Don’t forget to check Swimming and Diving when donating!!! Marvin reports that we are in good financial condition and have plenty of liquid assets (not including the diving well water) to put on our annual banquet, provide the team and Erwin Award plaques, print and mail our fun letter and help where we can. Our balance stands at just over $10,000.00. Your little splash helps us promote UT Swimming and Diving, give honor to our great past and help the future of Burnt Orange Aquatics.

WET SPOTS . . .

A packed house at the OASIS sings Deloss & Mary Ann Dodds with loyal “The Eyes of Texas” with the NCAA WETS Peyton and Carolyn Townsend CHAMPS

It sure was fun attending the 2010 Men’s Team Banquet at the Oasis above Lake Travis. Lots of exes and fans (about 200) were there to congratulate the team and coaches……It was very nice of the athletic department to invite former swimmers and divers to the celebration. It was great to see the World’s greatest Athletic Director there, Deloss Dodds and a lot of the staff that help keep Texas one of the strongest universities in all sports… Don’t know if anyone could have predicted that we would end up with a ten-team Big XII (make that BIG III in men’s swimming)….I read a nice article about the late, great Frank Erwin on the Texas Sports website: http://www.texassports.com/genrel/070610aaa.html Our WETS awards are named for Frank for his effort to build the world’s greatest swim center and taking UT facilities to the highest level……Congrats to Laura Wikinson and Richard Quick(posthumously) for being nominated for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. There were 4 other Longhorns (Justin Leonard-golf, Keith Morland-baseball, Marty Akins-football and Donna Lopiano (UT Women’s AD) among the finalist for this prestigious award… speaking of Laura; she is back in the pool training for Nationals (this time on 3m springboard). Asked if it’s a comeback; she said she just misses the sport so much. Good FRANK ERWIN luck Laura….Coach Pat Patterson had surgery to remove a spot from his lung. He reports it to be a success and hopes to be at the September reunion. Please keep him and the Patterson family in your prayers…..It was so wonderful to see the many Texas Exes at the TSDHOF Luncheon in April. I am sure our heroes from the 40’s will appreciate the 2 relay photos in this letter donated by Una Faye Pryor and identified by Marc Yancey We hope to see you all again and more at the TSDHOF Invitational in our pool in December….. If any of you have pictures, news or address changes; please send to WETS or email [email protected]. Jill Sterkel [email protected] is keeping up with all email addresses and getting news out to all of us. Please let her know your email address so she can continue to build a great support base for Longhorn Swimming and Diving. Don’t forget to reserve your spot for the banquet

1946 – 200M RELAY with TED [email protected] or the tailgate with JILL… Hook’em Eddie Gilbert, John Fosdick, Wally Pryor, and See you there…. Joe Wiley
