Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with the basics of the Dental Materials' science and a perspective on the advancements in newly developed materials or improvements to those currently in use. This includes the introduction to the main dental materials applied in the dental services (clinics, labs, hospitals…), their physical properties, handling characteristics, their use in the fabrication of dental appliances or the maintenance of dental materials once they are placed in the mouth. Such knowledge will be applied for the selection and provision of optimal dental care within the dental clinic and is instrumental in educating patients in the home maintenance of restorations and prostheses as well as preventive education and therapy.

Assessment

Written Exams:

 Two exams are scheduled for the semester: Mid-term and Final Examinations  Examinations may consist of objective questions, matching questions, multiple choice questions, and short answer questions for the analysis and application of what you have learned.

Quizzes:  Unscheduled quizzes will be given during the course.  These will serve to encourage the student to keep on track in terms of building and reviewing the basic knowledge presented and as a rehearsal of other exam styles which may be covered in addition to the inter-semester tests.  Absence from quizzes cannot be made up.

Assignments and Presentations  Each student will be assigned presentation topics during the semester.

Marks Distribution

Theory Examinations  Midterm Examination : 30 %  Final Examination : 40%

Quizzes : 10%

Assignments & Presentations : 20%
