COURSE DESCRIPTION The purpose of this class is to investigate the basic principles of geometry, construct logical arguments, and prepare students for Algebra II.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED - Notebook or 3-Ring Binder - Pen or Pencil - Folder - Straightedge - Compass - Protractor - Calculator (Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS or TI-30XS recommended) Students do NOT need a graphing calculator for this course. Any scientific calculator will do. Graphing calculators will be made available for the days we need them.

ASSIGNMENTS Practice is critical for success in mathematics, therefore work is assigned daily. Assignments will be put in a notebook and not turned in daily. Students need to: 1. Keep assignments in order in your notebook and label the page number from the book 2. Complete every assignment and correct the problems that are incorrect 3. Remember to correct the work, as well as the answer

Homework will be collected in groups and graded on a 0 to 4 scale based on accuracy and completion of the work. This score will be recorded in the formative category.

There will be three ways to find out the homework:  Assignments are listed on the board in the classroom each day.  I have an assignment sheet posted in the room that shows all assignments that have been assigned so far this trimester. If you have been absent or fallen behind on class work, you can check this sheet to see what work needs to be completed.  Assignments are posted on my teacher web page. Go to www.district279.org/sec/ojh/ to access the school homepage. From the Academic menu, scroll down and choose Math. Select Ms. Campbell’s Geometry from the list of teachers on the right side of the screen. You will see a list of assignments and the dates of upcoming tests and homework quizzes.

PLANNERS Daily objectives, assignments and upcoming homework quizzes and assessments will be written on the board for you to copy down into your planner. I strongly encourage the use of the daily planner as an organizational tool and believe it to be very effective when used on a regular basis. GRADING For each assignment, quiz, or test, a student will be given a task grade. Task grades will be assigned with a 0-4 scale according to the table below. Notice there are no letter grades assigned to the task grades! Gone are the days when a 4 was an A, 3 was a B, etc. However, at the end of the trimester, students will be given a term grade. A student’s term grade will be assigned based on the average of the task grades using the scale below.

THIS RUBRIC IS BUILT AROUND THE PHILOSOPHY THAT A “2” REPRESENTS A “BASIC, SIMPLE, OR INCONSISTENT UNDERSTANDING” OF THE STANDARD.

TASK GRADES TERM GRADES

Final grade calculations are composed of two parts: Formative assessments (practice) and summative assessments (tests). Formative assessments make up 15% of the overall grade, while tests make up 85%.

SUMMATIVE (85%) The summative portion of a student’s grade is made up of scores from tests. Summative assessments are meant to be a final demonstration of a student’s proficiency for each learning target. It is best to fully prepare so that no additional work is necessary. However, with grading so heavily weighted towards tests, students will have opportunities to improve their summative scores (retakes).

FORMATIVE (15%) The formative portion of a student’s grade is made of any formative work done prior to the summative assessment. This includes in-class problems, homework assignments, quizzes, and practice tests. It is crucial to keep up to date on formative work to ensure success on the summative assessments.

COMMUNICATION I will use remind.com to send you important reminders about class. Information for signing up is on the attached page. I encourage both students and parents to sign up and start receiving updates.

Students and parents are able to check grades online. It is your responsibility to monitor your grade. In most cases, grades will be updated within one week of the assignment’s due date. Make-up work and large assignments may take longer to be updated online. Please be aware that overall grades can change greatly from day to day, especially when there are just a few or less significant assignments posted.

If you don’t have a parent view account, please contact the OJH main office at (763) 391-8800 to receive information about setting up an account. RETAKES Preparing adequately for a summative assessment is always best; however, I understand that sometimes a retake is necessary. Students will have the opportunity to do the retake on “R & R” day (review and retake); which will be the day before the next assessment. There will not be an opportunity for a retake on the trimester finals. They can retake any score that is lower than 4.

Students will be able to do a retake on any two learning targets per assessment, under the following conditions:  The student must have accurately completed and turned in the Practice Test packet on the day of the 1st assessment.  The student must complete a 2nd Opportunity Guidelines reflection form and get it signed by a parent before “R & R” day.  All assignments must have been completed and turned in before the 1st assessment was given.  Before “R & R” day, the student must accurately complete the corrective action problems for each learning target being retested to help prepare for the retake.  Students will be allowed only 1 retake on each learning target.

If you don’t have a parent view account, please contact the OJH main office at (763) 391-8800 to receive information about setting up an account.

PASSES You will be allowed to use 2 passes per trimester in math class. You will not be given any locker passes. Use your passing time wisely so you have passes when you really need them.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS My classroom expectations reinforce The Oriole Way: We Are Responsible, Respectful, and Resourceful. Please follow these rules to make math a positive experience for everyone.  Be in your seat and ready to begin when the bell rings.  Bring proper materials to class (book, pencil, calculator, and paper)  Respect others  Stay on task  Remain seated until dismissed by the teacher

Students, if you feel that you need extra help, I am available before and after school. There are also a couple of resources that you may find helpful. You may visit the website www.classzone.com for interactive tutorials and to practice skills directly related to the lessons in your textbook. Your textbook will also be available online at classzone.com. Information about accessing the book will be available soon. If you have a computer, but no internet access, you may check out a disc from me to load the same information onto your computer at home.

I am looking forward to a fun and productive year of exploring geometry. If you have any questions throughout the year, you may call me at (763) 391-8800 ext. 34173 or email me at [email protected]. Ms. Campbell
