1. Executive Director’s Reflection * I often hear many of you share those critical and precious experiences in your ministry of spiritual care with those whose illness, age, or nearness to death brings them to an intense personal awareness of the crucial or graced character of that time. Some of you use the word kairos to describe it, as it is used in yesterday’s Gospel reading of Mark 1:12-15 that ends with "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." (read more…)

14. Spiritual Care Champions Series announces its 2012-2013 Webinar Series * The NACC worked with Catholic Health East and the other Catholic healthcare partners in developing a new, unique webinar series for 2012-2013 that explores the standards of practice for chaplains and spiritual care. We believe you will find this series very timely and educational. Yearly registrations are now available until Friday, March 16th, 2012. The cost is $180 per phone line for 12 presentations (April 2012 – March 2013). After March 16th, 2012, registrations for individual presentations will be available for $18 per phone line, for each individual presentation. 15. Request: making a business case for chaplaincy * The CHA Pastoral Care Advisory Committee is undertaking several initiatives to support and improve spiritual care in systems. The communication sub-group is working on developing content for making a “business” case for chaplaincy with administration. If any of you have developed any type of presentation to your administrative leaders that you are willing to share with us, please send it to David Lichter ([email protected]) by Friday, March 9th. Thank you in advance.

16. Request: advice from EPIC users * NACC member, Karen Gorski, BCC, works for the Henry Ford Health Care System. The system will be adopting EPIC as the format for electronic medical records. The chaplains in the system have been invited to a meeting to discuss the spiritual care element. For those using EPIC, do you have advice or suggestions about the program, such as what is already in place that is of value, and what we might want to be sure to include if we are given the opportunity to add elements that would be particularly helpful? Comments can be directed to Karen Gorski at [email protected]. Karen is willing to share any feedback with others who are interested.

17. Request: assistance in administering Catholic Patients’ Satisfaction Survey * NACC member Fr. Fidelis I. Ekemgba is about to conduct a Catholic Patients' Satisfaction Survey in the Hospital where he provides care. He requests input from members who have done this before. Questionnaire format, collection methods and the preservation of confidentiality of responders/patients especially would be helpful. He can be reached at [email protected]. Fr. Fidelis thanks you in advance for your assistance in this regard.

18. Request: call for help on end-of-life discussion research * Paula Hopeck, doctoral candidate at Purdue University, is looking for interview participants for her dissertation research. The topic is on facilitating end-of-life decisions for others, particularly when there is conflict between the family. She can be reached at [email protected] if you have questions or are interested in participating. The study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Purdue University.

19. Request: what medical consent to treat forms do you use? * Our NACC member, Colette Hanlon, SC, BCC, has received some responses, but would appreciate other responses from members who are willing to share with her a copy of their Medical Consent to Treat Form and also a "script" (if you use one) for Admitting Staff to inquire about religious affiliation and whether or not they want that information restricted. Samples could be sent to her email [email protected] (W) [email protected] (H) or mailed to Colette Hanlon, S.C., 584 East St. #2, Pittsfield, MA 0120.
